Nowell's Story

Life I've been in the East Bay since 1946 except for three years away in the army. My wife Sharon was born and raised in Stockton. We met in Berkeley and were married in 1965. We have two sons, two daughters, two granddaughters and two grandsons. We live in Hercules. School Grade School: K - 2, Bayo Vista School; 3, Garretson Heights School; 4 - 5, Hillcrest School; 6, Pinole-Hercules School #2; 7, Pinole-Hercules School #1; 8, Garretson Heights School; 9 - 12, John Swett High School; Night classes in Oklahoma at Cameron State Agricultural College, Lawton. College I attended the Univ. of California at Berkeley from 1962 to 1967, with a year and a half out to work and get money to continue. My major was Asian languages with emphasis in Japanese. college I worked at a sheet metal shop summers. I worked at a land title insurance company for three years total, 1964 to 1969, with time out to finish college. In 1969 I started a 24-year career as a contract specialist at the Naval Supply Center in Oakland. After retirement from the civil service at the end of 1993, I have been working in office jobs, purchasing, mail, etc. I quit my last job at the end of September 2009. Military I enlisted in the Army in June 1959, and started basic training at Fort Ord, California June 18. I went through a crane-shovel operator's course at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri in September and October 1959, and arrived at the Engineer Depot, ASCOM City, Bupyeong, Korea in November 1959. In July 1960 I was transferred to a security company (guard duty) at Seongwol Ri, Korea until November 1960, when I was assigned to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma until June 1962.
