Pam's Story

Life I'm happily married to a wonderful guy I met at Sullivan County Community College. We live on Long Island and have 5 kids, 2 boys and 3 girls, ages 30 - 12. (All still live at home or nearby...it's the economy...LOL). I've been involved in the homeschooling movement both as a homeschooling parent and a support group leader for more than 25 years, having graduated our 3 oldest children already (one's a teacher, the other is a mechanic, one is a home health aide), 1 is about to graduate and will be starting college in the fall with a major of culinary arts and nutrition, and our youngest will start his junior high school level studies in the fall - 4 down, 1 to go - LOL). I'm currently still homeschooling our 2 youngest (well, 2 for another few weeks anyway) and working part time nights and weekends as a research interviewer for a marketing company and do some writing and singing on the side. I love music (almost all kinds), creating art (mostly needlework, but other things too), cooking, reading, My class prophecy in the Monticello High School yearbook was that I would become an opera singer. It was partially right. I've continued to sing over the years, everything from operetta to contemporary gospel. Would love to connect with old friends... :) **Using the story wizard now:** - I hope old friends remember me as a good friend. - Wildest thing I ever did in school...Not much, my head and heart were sooo much into music...still is...the cool thing, when I sing now, my adult son plays guitar...he's a guitarist with a local band that will be releasing their 1st CD in the fall...The band's name is Upword Spiral and have a great indie sound...check them out!! - If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have some really good coffee or tea, my cell phone (to read the news when I have a spare minute), and paper and pencil (I still love to doodle) to be able to deal with the day-to-day. - Where have you lived? All over the state of New York. Why did you move? In each case, job or school related. - The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is really 2 people, both dear friends, one is my friend Joe from college, aka the brother I never had and the other is Jon Kimmel, class of '76 (?) because I miss them both...both died too soon... - Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. What's been your biggest surprise? Where we live...I love Long Island's varied geography, but I always thought I'd end up in upstate NY or out of state all together, but the job market is here, so here we are... - If I could improve my home, I'd double the size and add a covered front porch. My dream home would be a log cabin, a craftsman or a large bungalow style home with a covered front porch. - Share what you've learned from your kids. The biggest thing I've learned is how tough parenthood is when your kids are grown...You can't guide them anymore...you have to sit back and let them go...so even when you disagree with the way they handle things in their lives...you have to give them the space to deal with i...Expand for more
t and learn on their own...Not always an easy thing to watch... - Which teacher would you love to see again? Why? My 2nd and 5th grade teachers when I lived in the Bronx, my music teacher from 8th and 9th grade in Yonkers, and my 12th grade music teacher and home ec. teacher at Monti High...Each really made a difference in my life and I'd love to be able to thank each one of them and see how they are doing... - If I won $100 million, I'd give 10% of it to a ministry our family is involved with, establish a benevolence fund for those in need, pay off our bills, buy another house, a vacation for our whole family, pay off our older children's bills, put away for college for our younger ones, buy a new car and a trust fund for each of the kids and ourselves and, put away for retirement. - To be truly happy, you would be where, doing what, with whom? Happiness doesn't happen because of location, people, etc. Happiness is a choice and I choose to be happy... :) - Working hard? Reveal your career aspirations. I was never able to finish my degree in mental health and since those days, my interests broadened to include a lot of branches of alternative medical treatment, so now that all the kids but our youngest are grown, I'm taking the next couple of years or so to take CLEP exams for some of my general requirements, then will finish my bachelors degree in some form holistic health, either through Empire State College's interdisciplinary studies program or through New York College. (That oughta keep me busy and out of trouble...Who knows, they may call me Dr. Mom someday...LOL) - What happened to your first crush? Don't know, but I wish him well... - My best friend would tell you I'm really shy , but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as very outgoing. - Still dress like you did 10 (or 20) years ago? Talk style. Still a jeans and t-shirt kinda gal (still a hippie...peace, love and hope, not dope...) - You get one do-over. What do you do differently? I would definitely have skipped that nasty car accident I had in the late '90's. - In 10 years, I hope to be studying herbology and other alternative forms of medicine. I'm going to get there by (as usual) working my butt off!! - Talk about your oldest friend — how you met and why you clicked. Vicki and I met in junior high school in Yonkers...We're still close friends more than 40 years and a 1,000 miles later... :D Why we clicked? Hard to say...we are so totally different, but respect the difference... - My first job was at an ice cream stand in Monticello , where I got paid dittily to sling ice cream and hash. What I remember most about it is how lousy I was at it. LOL - Share a childhood memory you'll never forget. Too many to pick just one...All the singing...the playy...the music competitions...all the great people I met - teachers, students, principals, bus drivers, etc., (including my boyfriend in those days)...life in the beautiful Catskill Mountains...With all the ups and downs, I consider myself blessed...I'm a lucky lady... :)
