Pamela's Story

Life Update: 2016 - feel free to look at several of my photo albums. I just added a 'Before & after' - it has photos of me before & after my 1985 mouth surgery. Many have asked me about why I had it - especially those that didn't know me before I had the surgery. So I decided to add it to help see the difference. Update: early 2005 - I joined my T-M '70 Reunion Comm. So far I've been on the committee for our 35th, 40th, 45th & 50th reunions. Update: Apr. 2012 our daughter & son-in-law adopted a newborn baby boy! Update: Dec. 2009 Tom found another Golden Retriever at the animal shelter named Bowdy. After some meds for a thyroid problem his coat has cleared up, he has adjusted to us, the cat and new surroundings and is a welcomed joy to have. Update: Mar. '09 - Darth our Golden Retriever had to be put down because of a tumor that had ruptured. It was like losing a member of the family. He was the sweetest dog and is greatly missed. Oct. '06 I had laser eye surgery that corrected some of my vision. Now I only need to wear glasses for distance! Time to update my 'now' picture. I was born in Dayton, OH and went to Patterson Elem. school till my family moved to Townview during my 6th grade & went to Trotwood-Madison schools. I was in the class of 1970 but graduated early in 1969. (see school profile) Sept. 1969, I started working at the Ohio Bell Tele. Co. (aka Ameritech/SBC/at&t) as an "Information" operator. In 1972 I transferred to the Engineering Dept. and worked there till I retired with 30 yrs of service in 2000 (see work profile). In Sept. 1970 I married my 1st husband, we had a son in 1973. We later had an amicable divorce in 1975. I met my present husband Tom in 1976 but didn't marry till 1983. He has a daughter from his previous marriage. But she's more like my own rather than a step-daughter. Now I have the perfect family - a son and daughter. In 1983 at 32 yrs old I made a life altering decision. I had braces and surgery to correct an overbite and bone removed in my upper jaw at Ohio State Univ. Hospital. This shortened my face thereby changing my looks. So much so that when I returned to work, fellow employees thought I was a new person in the dept. It's one thing not to recognize someone at class reunions because it's been a long time since seeing each other. But add altering your face then it gets even harder. Guess that's why I used to feel like such a stranger at the reunions. That has changed with me joining the reunion committee! LOL!! But it does help to wear name badges that has our Sr. picture! Let's face it! We've all changed a lot since high school. I have a son from my 1st marriage. He's married and has given us two beautiful granddaughters and I love that they live near by. My step-daughter is married and used to live in the Atlanta, GA area. She has a Masters in Environmental Science. Update: She and her husband adopted a newborn baby boy in 2012. Although they don't live close to us, we still try to see them 3-4 times a year if we can. Thankfully ATL is only a day's drive away! UPDATE: They now live in Raleigh, NC! Another new city to explore that we've never been to visit. My husband is retired from General Motors so we are both retired. We have a Golden Retriever Bowdy, he keeps us entertained on a daily basis. Update: our cat JoJo crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2014. And Bowdy has since also crossed the Rainbow Bridge. For now we are pet free. We'd love to have another pet but as you get older they become more work. We continue to take yearly trips to Las Vegas where Tom plays in pool tournaments and of course enjoys a little gambling. We like to travel and to visit family when we can. My sister lives out of state. We also enjoy getting together with family here in Ohio. I'd like to continue doing some type of volunteering for other organizations or hospitals. For now, I'm trying to enjoy all that life has to offer in retirement. Freedom to do whatever it is I want and when I want to do it. Hope you're doing as well. School: I have a very vague recollection of starting Kindergarten at Ruskin Elem. in Dayton. We moved very soon after I started there. Then I transferred to Patterson Elem. School on Wyoming St. in Dayt...Expand for more
on. Went there from Kindergarten till the middle of my 6th grade. This is where I have most memories of growing up as a child. We lived on Ashley St. then moved to my Great Grandmother's house on Frank St. just a block away from the Mont. Co. Fairgrounds. Lots of fun memories playing there! Or the fun of the fair over Labor Day weekend. I left many friends at Patterson Elem. that went on to attend Stivers and Patterson Co-Op High School. I've enjoyed reconnecting with quite a few of them since I've retired! Our family then moved to Townview where I finished out the rest of 6th grade at Townview Elem. Then onto the big schools - Trotwood-Madison Jr. and Sr High Schools. Anxious to graduate and get out into the working world, I went to summer school after my Junior year so I could graduate in July 1969, a year early. As my high school class of '70 was starting school in Sept. 1969, I was beginning my 30+ year career at Ohio Bell. And no, I have no regrets about not walking with my class at graduation. Workplace: I started Sept. 1969 as an "Information Operator" at Ohio Bell in downtown Dayton at 215 W. 2nd St. (After the baby Bell split, Ohio Bell became Ameritech, then SBC and now AT&T). During my first year at Ma Bell I was asked to speak to students from Trotwood-Madison High School. They wanted me to tell them what a great place it was to work. This was weird! These were my classmates, I should be standing there with them! I didn't like speaking in front of class in school, what made me think I could talk in front of my classmates now - at work? Somehow I fumbled through it, and I apologize to those of you that were there and had to listen to me stumble through my little speech. I enjoyed working in "Information" and felt I had made the right decision to graduate early. After I was married, working 3 out of 4 weekends, holidays and split shifts got to be very old. I kept seeing people leave only to find out they were transferring to other depts. I found out you didn't have to know the new job because they would train you. Great! Sign me up! By July 1972 I transferred to the Engineering Dept. on Woodman Dr. in Kettering. A scary move but a great move for me. I became a drafter, drawing up construction work prints and posting permanent records for the Engrs. This was a job where you had to think! It takes an analytical mind to do this job well and I found my hidden talent along with printing skills. About 4 years prior to my retirement our Engineering Dept. moved forward in the world of technology. We went from manual drafting (Construction jobs on paper/pencil and Permanent Records on linen records w/ink) to computer drafting. Being in the Engineering Dept. for 28 yrs., I became one of the more experienced to help train others over the years. . While working for the phone co. I also became very involved with a community service organization called Telephone Pioneers of America. I was the leader for many of our projects. I also held the offices of V-Pres. and Pres. We worked with many organizations like Special Olympics, Alzheimer's Assoc., Dayton City Schools, United Rehabilitation Services and many others. This was a very rewarding part of my life. I met many special people and it helped me work through my fear of speaking in front of people - even had to speak a few times on TV! Hoping no one recognized me! :) Near the end of my working career at Ma Bell, I was chosen to work on a team with management to help rewrite a practice. Yes, I was speaking and training in front of people. I was never totally comfortable speaking in front of people but now I knew I could do it. It also gave me a whole new respect for staff people. As much as I loved my job and the many friends I made while working, I was ready to settle down to the retired life. When I started in 1969 at Ohio Bell, I had no idea I would still be there 30+ years later. I don't regret all those years of working, it made me a stronger and better person. I have so much more confidence in myself. For those that knew me in high school, you remember me as someone that was quiet, kept to herself and her close friends. At least that's how I remember it. Now, I'm happy where life has taken me - home and a more confident woman.
