Patricia's Story
Life
Born in Minneapolis in 1942 as Patricia Corwin. When my parents divorced I moved to Wisconsin with my grandparents on their farm. Our home was two bedroom, LR and a kitchen where three teenage boys, my grandparents, my mom and I lived - yet, it seemed big. "Mrs. Murphy" was down the hill.
My mother, Doris, remarried, to Joseph Fish in 1947. (I used the surname Fish through my school years to keep it simple.) We moved to the "cities" so my step-father could get work. Dad got a job as a plumber, Mom stayed home with me. We purchased a little 2 bedroom post-war rambler for $9750 on Upton Ave., "way out" in Richfield. My sister, Linda, and I went to school all years in Richfield. The community was a safe, fast growing suburb that was a joy for many families. And quite the adventure for me and my friend, Carolyn Krahl. We are still friends after 74 plus years!
In 1960, at 18 I married, even though my parents bribed me by saying they'd pay for college! I married a Navy man and moved to Florida. Our travels took us to Jacksonville and Key West, FL; Memphis, TN; and San Diego, CA. We have two children, Tony and Chris - the joy of our lives. In 1967, after Roni's nearly one-year stint in Viet Nam, we got out of the Navy and decided to return to M...Expand for more
innesota. Yup, to Richfield. Our home about six blocks from my parents so my children now had the support of grandparents being very close.
In 1972, sadly, my husband and I divorced. Being the only breadwinner and wanting to improve our lives, I started going to college. First to Normandale, then to the U of M, attaining degrees at both (English Lit.). Took a long time but the piece of paper is mine!
In 1977, I remarried (that's where the Strot name came from); divorced five years later. I guess like Helen Gurley Brown, I don't mate well in captivity!
But I am now retired from my long time I.T. profession. From 2015 to 2019 I volunteered for the Minnesota Reading Corps (part of Americorp) as a tutor. In 2020 I moved from Forest Lake, MN to Rosemount having downsized to a townhome. After retirement I have had time to enjoy family, hobbies of genealogy, travel, cooking, knitting and crocheting, walking, etc., and getting together with friends. My family includes my son and daughter, and six grandchildren, two great-granddaughters and great-grandson, my "life partner," good health, retirement, etc., etc.
