Patricia's Story

I spent many years going back & forth to Romania...as well as numerous other nations spread over four continents (but for shorter periods of time...Sudan, Kenya, India, etc.) I maintain close ties to those that entered within my heart, and still oversee the projects that were started. They are flourishing, and I'm certain, only the Lord could have continued to sustain this. It all started again with being asked to help with the organization and establishment of the first Christian library...just days after the execution of the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu (and his wife, Elena), leader of the Communist Party. (Although, I had been here prior to this time) I thought it would be a "one time shot", however, I fell in love with the people...which is the reason it lasted for so many years. There were many challenges along the way, none of which were really much of a deterrent, as I knew I belonged here for this time and this purpose. If we were not steadfast in this knowledge...we'd have never made it. I've had to ride in the trunks of their vehicles at times, covered with sheep hides...all to get past some security check points, or to pass into an area that their military was using. There was a time their military prevented me from entering the American Embassy (which is illegal), another instance, I was slammed to the ground after being hit in the back with a rifle butt, another time our apartment had been broken into and a fire was started. Thank the Lord that a neighbor knew where I was and came to get me. Needless to say, informing the "authorities" wasn't even an option. The things stolen were my exposed film, and the tapes to my camcorder (plus two bras & an umbrella). There was another time that my passport was confiscated, and the contents of my backpack scattered at my feet. (This took place as I was walking down the street, but noticed that a huge anti-government demonstration was taking place. Both sides of this wide boulevard were lined with military, and all weapons drawn.) I was given NO information as to the reason behind this. This was one time I was tempted to panic, due to the fact I wasn't even being allowed into our embassy. Just as surprised I was that my passport was confiscated...48 hours later, it was returned to me, all without so much as a word, as to "why" it was taken! I still have no understanding, to this day, why that happened. The only thing that could add some rationale to what had just taken place...is that I was once accused of "walking free"...which translated means, that I wasn't constantly looking over my shoulder and would never avert my eyes when encountering military or police personnel. Many of the people I know, have a "room" built underneath their homes. These were used to have the ability to meet freely with others and to share their faith. The first time I went down into one of these rooms, I was suddenly struck with all the sacrifice these folks had to make simply to meet with others and to share their faith. It gave me an overwhelming feeling of 'unworthiness'...it also gave me the feeling of humbleness, at the thought of just being able to breathe their air. Due to another change within their government, I had to substantially "modify" what I was doing, in order not to cause harm to these beautiful people of Romania, so......after much prayer and a boost of ...Expand for more
courage, the idea to launch a Humanitarian Aid Relief organization was born! I must say, that it was myself that came away being encouraged and lifted in heart and with renewed purpose. The folks of Romania are simply amazing! This new direction was to get into the country sorely needed medical/surgical equipment and medicines. My "message" never changed, but my "method"...did change. This was an absolute necessity in order to protect those in country that were helping me to spread the "Word"and deliver all supplies. Were we 'unhindered'? No, but experience taught me how to navigate through the difficulty. I also had to use a different job "title"...since my training had also encompassed years of disaster relief training, my new title was "Humanitarian Aid Relief Coordinator & Educator for First Responders". This made entry into numerous nations much easier. Many of these folks took great personal risk, due to the fact, they recognized the tremendous need of their fellow countrymen to regain the hope that was stolen through all the decades of communist rule. Prior to the communists coming to power, there was a Nazi occupation. The first printing press, that was purchased to use in Romania's first Christian library, was purchased from East Germany. It's ironic to me that this printing press was originaly used to print communist propaganda...and ended up being used to print Christian literature! There were several other nations that I became involved in during this time. It was the Lord that 'opened' the doors...I simply walked through them. There were several others that would travel with me at times. We were able to duplicate, in some formerly closed nations, what had been done in Romania. Other nations, not so open...our "method" had to be tempered to the folks that it was our desire to bring a fresh does of love and hope, while providing some sorely needed necessities. It never ceases to amaze me...right when you think the Lord has surely outdone Himself, He outdoes Himself!! Just as the "Word" says..."He's not willing that ANY should perish...". I have learned through His "Word" and life experience...that ANY...means just that...ANY! My "other life passion" for the past 30 years has been, and remains, Constitutional Law (and politics!!)...for many years I regretted not going into law as a profession. However, I now know that my time in Romania and numerous other nations was ordained of God and that was where I was "supposed to be" for a particular plan and purpose! If we're told to "judge things by the fruit it produces..."...then there is no doubt... Romania is the place I was meant to be. A large portion of my heart remains there to this very day...and I continue to have close relationship with many of those that are forever etched within my heart. There have been reunions in the past and I was never able to attend. None of us are guaranteed a tomorrow...and time passes so quickly. To those of you that had the luxury of attending a MHS Reunion for our class of '69...I'd love to have some photos. Please, contact me if you have a few. I have such a desire to connect with some of you (and many that I never had the courage to befriend) that I knew "back in the day". It would be such a delight to hear from former classmates whenever you have a moment. Kindest Regards, Patricia Hammond April 2017
