Patricia's Story

Even though years have passed since I have seen some old classmates I often wonder, and wonder if anyone else is wondering, so in case you are about me, I went to Our Lady of Refuge and graduated in 1963, went to St. Barnabas, graduated 1967, graduated Marywood College in 1971, came back to New York, went to Adelphi University, graduated 1981, took my time on that one, worked in the New York City schools for over 30 years, as a teacher and recently retired, live on Long Island, That's it in a nutshell, there is much in between, but basically I am enjoying my life and look back on all those experiences with older wiser eyes, when going through those years, was often not too happy a person, but thankfully I have grown to feel differently now, and treasure many of my memories from all or most of these places, especially people I met even if I did not keep up with them. My memories of OLR are mixed, trying to stay awake was a big one, the classes were big, and lots of quiet rote work, I was bored a lot, I feel asleep sometimes, I took piano lessons because my mom wanted all of the kids (5) to do it, I did it for the time out of the class more than anything, and the teacher was so wonderful, I enjoyed being around her, but must have been a supreme disappointment or bore to her. I could not play. I started feeling more like a person in highschool, I...Expand for more
liked the freedom, commuting by public bus, walking the walk from the last stop of the # 4 bus to school and going to different classes, with different teachers, at least I had to wake up every 45 minutes to change class. I did ok there, average I guess, never a top students, anywhere, but I got by. I liked the sleepovers and basketball games, working on the newspaper and yearbook, taking photos at the games was my thing, and hanging out with the girls after school. College, I didn't want to leave New York, and wished I could stay home and just go to one of the city universities, I loved NYC, who doesn't and couldn't imagine leaving to go to some isolated place that can't make good pizza, my favorite thing back then, and only in new york can you get the real thing, still. But I had to fo,went, and eventually I did find the good in it, I guess, I did meet some friends that have become lifelong and am sorry that I can't get to see them more often, but life is busy and I have to be around the house to save the house from a possible college invasion, I have one college age kid, and fear the college drinking party when mom and dad are away syndrome, so we stay close by and walk the Jones Beach boardwalk rather than take trips, for now. Trips should come back again, one of these days. So in case you've been wondering, I am still around and doing ok.
