PATRICIA's Story
Hello, friends. Charlotte Gilmore was a favorite teacher of mine. She taught third grade at Fulton school in Tinley Park. I remember she came from Mokena or Frankfort, so when I retired in 2010, I put on a push to find her. Luck was with me. She had married and moved to New Hampshire. So, I tracked down an address, wrote several times to her that summer and sent her photos of myself, my brother Mike, who was also in her class two years after me, and a photo of my mom. She gradually became comfortable with my idea of coming out to see her. In October I did go out to see her and we visited over several days. She lived alone in a house set in the woods. it was the fact that she had kept the class pictures for every single year she taught. She retrieved my class and my brother's class photos from a file cabinet in another room. Each had all the children's names written on the back in her neat handwriting. We spent nearly an hour sharing stories about all of us in those photos. I am so glad we had that visit! If you have a favorite teacher you remember fondly, try to find them and tell them how much they meant to you. There is not enough time to delay. Miss Gilmore, the teacher I most adored, passed away only six months after we had laughed and cried together about the third grade at Burt Fulton School.
