Patricia's Story
I got out of the Army in 1995, after having twins, and doing 9.5 years. I felt it was in the best interest of my children. I lived in Sierra Vista, AZ for a short time, then I moved back to St. Louis, where I am originally from, in 1996; I stayed about 2 years, then in 1998, I moved to Atlanta, GA. I worked for IBM as a Project Coordinator from 1998-2000, then I went to ADP Benefits Services as an Eligibility Research Analyst, worked there from 2000-2003. Had a good life, nice house, nice car, then the boom hit me, after 9/11 Atlanta like other major cities started losing jobs. My company moved my division to Iowa, so I became one of the unemployed. I was out of work for over a year. In the interim I had went back to school, I got a degree in Computer Science, but by the time I got it, the job market was already faltering and as you know the CIS field was oversaturated; anyway, I worked odd jobs for a minute and kept applying for other jobs in Atlanta, but everywhere I went, I was told I was overqualified for the positi...Expand for more
on and kept getting turned down repeatedly, finally I started casting my net wider. I applied for government jobs in Atlanta, Dallas and St. Louis, ATL and Dallas turned me down, but St. Louis called me, so in 2005, I came home. In 2006, I went back to school again, this time for a degree in Business Administration with emphasis on Accounting. On July 26, 2008, I graduated with honors from Columbia College. I have another house and a new car. People often ask me how did I manage to live in Atlanta for almost 18 months without a job, I tell them I got by with the Grace of God and a little help from my friends. I was able to sell my house in ATL, before it went into foreclosure, I lost my car, but now I have a better one, so you see, no matter what happens to you, if God is for you, who and what in all the world can be against you? I have two great 21 year olds, a boy and a girl, who both are in college. They are great kids. At present I am a Statistician at US Department of Agriculture. Life is a blessing and it's good!
