Patricia's Story
School
I was in the medical profession from 1982 to 2005. After high school, I worked as a legal secretary for almost two years, then attended a private career school to become a medical assistant (those are the folks that draw your blood, give you injections, etc., in a physicians office). I worked in a great practice for quite a number of years.
In 1989, I began teaching Medical Assisting at a local private career school in Maryland, working my way from instructor, to Evening Supervisor, and finally to Director of Education in 2000. In late 2001, I moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and that is where I currently reside.
I taught for another private career school here in Tulsa for a while (as of the summer of 2006, I have been here for five years). I really became burned out with the medical profession and changed careers last spring. Now, I work for a great national bank in the Tulsa area and am a successful mortgage banker.
While I have never married in the traditional sense, I am very much in love and have two "step" kids, one "step" granddaughter. I also have two dogs and a cat ... there's a hamster and fish in the house too, but they belong to the kids.
Workplace
Upon graduation from high school, I worked as a legal secretary for almost two years. I then attended the Medix School, in Glen Burnie, to become a medical assistant. Upon graduation from Medix, I became a certified medical assistant and certified phlebotomy technician, and worked for over six years for a physician in private practice. The pract...Expand for more
ice was mainly comprised of HIV+ individuals.
After this, I became an instructor for the Medix School. I worked for about 2 1/2 years as an instructor of Medical Assisting, and upon burnout I left (hoping to move out of state, which never happened). I worked for a few months at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, working on AIDS vaccine trials, but quickly grew bored with working in research and returned to instructing Medical Assisting at the same school. Again, I worked as an instructor for about three years, and had a better offer to work as an Administrator of an OB/Gyn Surgical Center, which I did for one year.
After realizing that I really didn't care for patient care any longer and really missed being in the educational system, I returned to Medix as the Evening Education Supervisor, where I worked for four years. I was then promoted to Director of Education, serving in this capacity for over one year before I decided to move out of state to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Upon arriving in Tulsa, I was immediately hired by one of the private career schools where I taught medical assisting to adult students.
Last spring (2005), I decided that 22+ years in the medical field was enough. I became a mortgage loan officer for a local mortgage broker firm. After six months of making no money at all (none to really speak of), I went to work with a national direct lender bank here in Tulsa. I have been here since September and have been extremely successful with ny new career helping people obtain home mortgage financing.
