Patrick's Story
Life
Teaching really was an afterthought, when I realized that I would never be able to make a full-time living as a singer. I have just recently retired from teaching after 30 years in the classroom. I have taught mostly choral/vocal music courses, mostly at the high school and college level. The majority of my teaching career was as the Director of Choral Music at Snohomish High School. I have been married 34 years and my wife, Rae-Lyn and I have two kids, Jason, 27 and Julie, 23. Jason is a high school social studies teacher and baseball coach in Kelso and Longview, Washington and Julie is a Religious Studies major at Central Washington University.
I would love to visit with friends/teachers from high school or college or former students that I had in class. I look forward to hearing from any of you!!
School
The best part of any of my school experiences were the people that I met. I really wish that I could reach: Roland Rhue, Mike Lee, Steve Schindler, Mark Erickson or others with whom I grew up.My friends at Everett Communiity College that I would love to meet up with are Michelle Rawie, Annette Getzendanner, and Mark Turner.
College
My college experience began at Ever...Expand for more
ett Community College. I sang with Ted Wahlstrom and learned a great deal. I transferred to the University of Puget Sound and sang in the Adelphian Concert Choir, even spendng a semester in Vienna, Austria. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1975 and completed my Master of Music degree at Central Washington University in 1980.
Later, I studied Choral Conducting at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Workplace
I have been a choral director, professionally, for the past 29 years. This has afforded me the opportunity to work with students from elementary age to adults. I have even been the director of a professional choral ensemble. As I am now approaching retirement (after next year, 2005)I realize how very fortunate I have been to have had such wonderful teachers who were so willing to share the joy of music with me. Particularly when I did not deserve their willingness! People like Ted Walhstrom at Everett C. C. and Dr. Bruce Rodgers at the University of Puget Sound. Though both of these fine conductors are now gone, I owe them a great deal, as far as my musical education is concerned. I can only hope that I have passed on a small fraction of what they gave me!
