Patrick's Story
Collinsville High School Class of 1968.
(Attended Mt. Summit, Ind., public schools grades 1-6, 1956-62)
I've been married for almost 17 years to CHS classmate Karen Earhart. Between us we have three children and one grandchild.
Karen has been a teacher at every level, from elementary through college, in Missouri, California and Illinois. Since 1993 she has taught in the Highland district. She also has taught at Greenville, Lewis & Clark and McKendree Colleges, and is completing a doctorate in education. In her spare time, she directs a church choir.
I'm in charge of the reporting team at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that covers crime and courts, and I wrote a weekly column on the side. Most of my career as a journalist was spent as a street reporter, covering stories all across the country. In addition, I'm a panelist on a weekly political commentary TV show on Illinois cable systems, and I formerly taught part-time at Washington University.

ther of a year-old son, Isaac. She manages a mental health center in Granite City for Chestnut Health Systems. She has a bachelor's degree from SIUE and a master's from St. Louis U.
Daughter Heather Gauen is a project manager for a textbook publisher in Urbana, Ill. She has a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Son Christopher Stephenson is a first-year medical student at SIU, having just finished a biomedical engineering degree at Washington U.
I got in touch with Karen, who then lived in Southern California, upon the death of our mutual dear friend, Tom Burroughs, in 1991. She and I learned later that each other's first marriage had failed, and we fell in love when she visited "home" to see her parents. We "commuter dated" for a year and were "commuter married" for another, with her living in California and I in Collinsville. After she moved here, we made our home in Highland.
Our lives since have been built around family first and our busy careers.
