Patrick's Story
Graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1966 and earlier from Hilllcrest Elementary School (1960) and South Junior High School (1963).
Brothers Dan (1967) and Tim (1972), sister Kristina (1969) and Kristina's husband Judge Ronald Nehring (1965) also graduated from Kalamazoo Central and attended South Junior High School. Ron died in 2019.
Graduated from Harvard College with honors in 1970 and from the University of Michigan Law School in 1974. Attended Hurricane Island Outward Bound School in 1969. Previous athletic interests included racquet sports, skiing, biking, sailing, running, and canoeing. Won the 1978 Midwest Platform Tennis Championship with doubles partner Mercer Reynolds.
Professional career has included teaching, coaching, law, insurance, journalism and business management. Current position: Vice President for New Business Development at Independent Life Insurance Company.
Knowledge specialty: structured settlements. Knowledge tools: wikis, blogs, concept maps and podcasts. Public online writing is accessible on Independent Life's two blogs (The Chronicle and The Knowledge Network), the Beyond Structured Settlements blog and the Harvard Crimson archives. Co-author with Daniel Hindert and Joseph Dehner of the legal textbook: Structured Settlements and Periodic Payment Judgments, which was published in 1986 and is updated semi-annually.
Moved from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Terrace Park, Ohio in 1977 and to Warren County Ohio in 2008 with spouse Louise Jones Hindert. Louise competes in animal sports (formerly hunter jumper and now schutzhund) and manages our domestic animals which include dogs, cats, rabbits and fish. We have two sons: Johann and Conrad and two grandchildren.
Current personal interests include: reading (history, politics, espionage fiction); bird watching; dog walking; bike riding; swimming; table tennis; meditation; high school sports; and University of Michigan athletics.
