Patrick's Story

After having the locks on my car freeze one last time I decided to leave NJ in 1981 and head west to the warmer climes of southern California and the hedonistic lifestyle of LA. I also decided to change my career as well and attend law school. My girl friend at the time and now my wife and companion of 30 years decided to move with me and also enroll in law school in LA. She became the lawyer of the family and I went back into the food industry this time marketing tuna, canned tomatoes, ketchup and Asian foods for companies like H.J. Heinz, ConAgra and McCormick. After law school we packed up from LA and moved behind the "Orange Curtain" to the "OC" and bought our first house. Sailing, cycling and skiing in Tahoe were my passions. We later built our dream house in Yorba Linda right before our daughter was born. After 17 years in SoCal I received a great job offer in San Francisco and sold the sailboat. We have a great home and property with redwoods all around 18 miles east of the city. The bay area is home to the largest collection of foodies and winos in the country and this influenced me to challenge my cooking skills. Trips to the wine country for lunch or dinner and some wine tasting are always a benefit of living here. Our daughter is away attending one of the UCs in southern California and is halfway through her second year. Major declared but ever evolving. Whatever she chooses it should include negotiation. Contact is constant but less frequent and usually involves requests for additional funding. My wife is an attorney and pharmacist and practices both in a dual capacity role with a Drug chain. We both love to travel and have been to Europe and particularly Italy several times. My wife is fluent in Span...Expand for more
ish and French and has been studying Italian for five years. Our retirement goal is to purchase a residence in Europe, maintain a US base and ship over one of our cars and drive extensively throughout the continent. I want to learn how to cook like an Italian and party like a Greek and sail the Med like a Roman. We love history, art, food and wine and will be immersing ourselves in all of it. I almost forgot-we also have three parrots included in our "flock". Two Amazons and a feisty little African Grey who thinks she is human. They are extremely intelligent and perceptive creatures that are at times a real challenge to deal with. Update 5/2013- Our daughter graduated UCSB (no more tuition bills!) with a dual major one of which is French. She has her mom's gift for languages and did her entire Junior year abroad in Bordeaux and Lyon taking all her Bordeaux classes in French. The year was not enough and she had to spend the summer traveling Europe and Africa leaving France on the very last day that her one year visa expires. We created a travel monster. She is on her own, mostly, living and working in Santa Barbara, CA and taking post grad classes and pursuing her career passions in nutrition, food and health care. We added a few more continents to our travels namely, Africa and Asia with stays in Morocco and Turkey. We spent three weeks in Sicily driving the entire island. More trips on the horizon as we go house hunting in Portugal and Croatia. Our flock of parrots is now reduced to two. We lost our beloved Amazon "Squeek" in 2012. He was 29 years old and we had him since he was a baby. As I approach 60 I can't believe where the time has gone. I'm grateful for a lot of things and hope our health holds up.
