Patrick's Story
Life
Much has happened since my days at both Lake Benton and Burnsville High. After graduation, I joined the Army where I served as a member of the Army Ranger Regiment. I operated as an enlisted Airborne Infantryman, was fortunate to receive a lot of specialized training, and have many unique experiences around the world. Just a year and a half after graduation from high school, I was sent to Panama as a member of the initial invasion force for Operation "Just Cause". It was a rough thing to go through at nineteen years old, and those of you who knew me "back when" would be happy to know that I was finally forced to grow up. Big surprise huh? In 1992, after four years and a hundred different adventures, I left the military to attend college. Unlike high school, I actually worked hard and graduated from the U of M in 1997 with a degree in History. Today, I'm back in the military where I serve on active duty as a Major in the Medical Service Corp branch of the Army. My basic job is that of a MEDEVAC helicopter pilot and a company commander flying UH-60 "Blackhawk" helicopters. After spending a short year in flight school, I worked in a one-year overseas tour where I lived and flew along the DMZ separating North and South Korea. I moved to Kansas in January 2000, where I became a MEDEVAC Flight Platoon Leader charged with running a platoon of fifteen UH-60 helicopters and 62 people with a worldwide mission. From August to December 2001, I was the commander of the only US military helicopters in Saudi Arabia. There I experienced the full range of emotions, pressures, and experiences following the attacks on ...Expand for more
9-11. Upon my return from the Middle East, I attended advanced officer training, was offered and accepted a new assignment to research and develop new medical aircraft and doctrine for the military, and moved from Kansas to Texas. While living in San Antonio, I played a lot of golf and ice hockey, continued to fly, and met the love of my life. In June 2004, my wife Alexa and I moved to Germany where I continue to fly MEDEVAC missions for the Army. In 2005 I deployed a group of evacuation crews and aircraft to Romania for a joint exercise. Flew my aircraft through the Austrian Alps, Hungary, and throught Count Dracula's Carpathian mountains. In February 06, I delployed to southern Afghanistan for a year. I was able to return in May 06 to attend the birth of our first child, Bruce Andrew, born 23 May 2006. We named him after our fathers, who have both passed away in recent years. We were again blessed with a beautiful child in October 2008. Our baby girl Samantha arrived bringing more love into our hearts. In 2009 I took command of a large MEDEVAC company in Germany. I again deployed into harms way in 2010 as my unit and I were sent as part of the President's surge to Afghanistan's Helmand Provence in the south. Over the course of a year, we evacuated more than 2500 patients from the battlefields and forward bases in that region. I am now assigned to a small base just outside of Washington DC where I manage an operational garrison and numerous civilians who work there to sustain the post. I always enjoy hearing from old friends and classmates. Please, feel free to drop a line through here or my Facebook!
