Patti's Story
I suppose it's possible to sum up the past few decades pretty quickly.
After graduating HF, I went up north to Univ of Wisconsin and got my degree, eventually, in Art Video and Performance. Not one of those making-money degrees, but I got a job at CBS television in production for a few years.
After 10 years in Wisconsin, I moved to Chicago and roomed with my best pal, Chip Kucera (now an MD in Minneapolis) for a few years before he moved out to NY. By then I was working as a product designer for a photo album company. You'd think there wouldn't be a lot of designing needed for a photo album - it's a book with plastic pages for photos - but I learned a lot about manufacturing that was very interesting.
I met my husband, Peter, at a friend's party and we were already talking about life together by our second date. After ten years together, we still think it's a good idea!
By the time I was pregnant with our first child, our son, my mom decided to move further south to Matteson, so Peter and I bought her house here in Homewood. So I'm raising my kids in the same house in which I grew up. I had mixed feelings about coming back - it seemed that if I left here, and then ended up back here, that it was almost like I didn't go anywhere or accomplish anything in the interim. But I've gotten over that; there's something lovely to be said about having my child go to school with the children of former classmates. It's cozy, somehow. There's also the benefit of living across the street from Walt's grocery store!
I left my job in Chicago and started writing freelance for magazines and newspapers. Finally, I started grad school when I was very pregnant with our daughter....Expand for more
Whoo hoo! Now I know how to breastfeed and write a thesis at the same time! (the thesis was on using Gestalt Theory as a Learning system, by the way - evidently, I'm one of 5 Gestaltists in the U.S., so if you're one of the other 4, or if you'd like to become the 6th, call me!)
I got my Masters in Instructional Design, and now I work for a company in University Park (which used to be known as Park Forest South). I design curriculums for software training and write scripts and narrate e-learning classes. It's a passion to help people learn. I truly love it.
My son, Nicholas who has been reading over my shoulder, has just said, "Aren't you going to write about Amelia and me, and about how we're great and all that stuff?"
Yes, of course, how clumsy of me...
I am blessed with a terrific, supportive, loving and cute husband, and two funny, wonderful, gorgeous, smart and gentle kids, ages 7 and 4. I can't imagine how anyone with kids can stop laughing long enough to breathe, and then I can't imagine how we let them live to adulthood. Ah, the wonders and challenges and joys of parenthood.
By the way, Nicholas goes to Western Ave. School - Mr. Sweeney (my Leavitt Ave. School 5th grade teacher) is still teaching there. Also, the school celebrated its 60th anniversary this year. It was a fun event, and I saw Ms. Neste (Leavitt principal) and Mrs. Champlain (Leavitt Kindergarten teacher) and saw a letter from Mrs. Papermaster with a recent photo - not only is she still alive, but she looks the same as when I was in 2nd grade.
Anyway, if you need anything from the old neighborhood - you want someone to send you an Aurelio's pizza or Mitchell's hot fudge - let me know.
