Paul's Story
Life
Hi!
My name is Paul Beem and I attended OLCH from '54 - '58, where I played basketball, ran track and sang in the choir. After HS, I went two years at the University of Chicago and then followed my folks out west, and finished up a B.S and M.S. at Stanford University, majoring in math and physics.
I taught HS math in San Francisco and lived the hippie life for while. I met my first wife, Donna, while singing in the SF Chorale Society. My first son, Matt, was born in SF.
Then I returned to graduate school and did a Ph.D. in mathematics (Algebraic Topology) at UVA, in Charlottesville. My second son, David, was born there. After a 2-year postdoctoral instructorship at Univ. of Pennsylvania (in Philadelphia), I settled down in South Bend, IN, where I taught math and did research for 29 years at Indiana University South Bend.
After my divorce from Donna, I married Sylvia...Expand for more
, who was the Head of Cataloging at the Hesbourg library at Notre Dame. (Free tix to the games! )
After my retirement from IUSB, we moved to Sedona, AZ, the most beautiful place in the world!
My hobbies include: hiking (a lot of trails here in Sedona), sportcars (just bought a new 350Z. Riddle: How do you get your wife to agree to your buying a sportscar? Answer: Sell a motorcycle! In my case, a Honda Goldwing.), politics (Verrry left of center! I was a Peace & Freedom member in CA. Now have mellowed to a Democratic precinct committee person), banjo playing (I had a bluegrass band in SB.), church (Elder in the Presbyterian church) and computers (I specialized in computer applications in math-ed my last several years at IUSB) and my boys. Matt is married, works as a graphics designer and lives in Indianapolis. David is married and is cellist in the Euclid Quartet at IUSB.
