Paul's Story

What haven't I done?!? The short version is as follows:
Attended a host of universities, including USC, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UCSD (where I finally graduated, with a degree in Computational Epistemology)...with many years in between each school, including a stint managing a book store and bumming around Europe. After graduating from UCSD I attended grad school at UCLA in Library and Information Science, where my dissertation was in intelligent information retrieval. Luckily, tho, I got fed up with the petty politics of academa and left before I finished my diss. I say luckily, because at this point in my life I can't imagine having spent the last 15 years as professor.
After grad school I worked for Kaiser for 10 years doing international tech standards work (one of the main KP reps to Health Level Seven, which defines standards for how medical computers share information; and I was HL7's rep to the World Wide...Expand for more
Web Consortium [W3C, you know, the folks that brought you the web :-], were I serve as the editor of the W3C XML Schema spec).
Finally got sick of the techno-geek stuff and 3 years ago followed my dream and became a wildlife and scenic photographer (you can see some of my work in the photos section...and more at photo.sparrow-hawk. org...I'll gladly give a "Friends and Family" discount on purchases of prints to anyone from LAHS). Moved to the middle of nowhere Colorado...the town has 70 people in it (mind you, there are 400 in "greater metropolitan Gardner" :-). One of those 70 is fellow LAHS '80 grad Nelson Holmes...yes, Nelson's the one who talked me into moving here...and I couldn't be happier! Bought a 76 acres ranch about 20 miles out of town where I'm building a Appalachian log house. The property has a trout creek running right by the building site, it's about 1/2 aspen and 1/2 pine and spruce. There are elk, deer, black bear, mountain lion, tons of raptors and kinds of other wildlife. A nature photographer's wet dread!
