Paul's Story

After graduating Easley, I attended Furman University where I was graduated with a BA in philosophy. I went to USC for a Masters in Information and Library Science. In the middle of my years at Furman I left school for two years to file as a conscientious objecter with the Greenville draft board. I did not take a school exemption to the draft and had a fairly low number in the lottery. My appeal was rejected by the draft board, but they ended up assigning me a status as morally unacceptable to serve because I objected to the war on moral grounds. A blockade of Charleston naval harbor that delayed a destoyer from leaving for Vietnam for a day had a little to do with that. After school I worked at libraries in Memphis, TN, S.C., Indiana, Mich. and IL. I was director of the Orangeburg Public Library for four years in the early 80's before becoming manager of the Readers' Services dept. at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I now manage the medical library at the Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove, IL. I married my high school sweetheart, Carolyn Davis, who graduated from Dacusville High in 1969. ended Furman together. She taught school while I worked as librarian. We had two children, Davis and Carrie. Davis is married with a baby on the way and works as an accountant. Carrie is toiling away at Barnes & Noble, which she loves. Caroly and I split in the late 80's after 17 years of marriage. We remained friends. She remarried to a United Methodist minister and now lives in Indiana. My second wife, Cathy Hill, and I met in Michigan at a retirement party for a mutal friend. She was a children's librarian but has served as the Deputy Director of the Mt. Prospect Public Library for about 12 years. We have been married for 19 years. Our last four years have been hard as Cathy's Mother, Father, and sister came to live with us due to poor health. During these four years, all three died. Cathy and I are pulling our lives back together and are thinking of retirement in a few years somewhere in the mountains of East TN or Western NC. We were very active in our American Baptist Church, Lake Street Baptist, in Evanston, IL. After our hiatus for the last four years. We are looking forward to being more involved in the future.
