Paul's Story

I'll use my usual introduction to new friends or even clients. I'm a Web-vangelist. Someone who really believes in the power of the Internet. I've been developing commercial websites and marketing them across the Net since 1995-96. Amongst my many weaknesses are a good cup of coffee and coffeehouse conversations. Sitting at with a cuppa in a mall, I might say to someone: "OK, let¿s take this shop over here. They¿ve got a lot of products on those shelves. I imagine they have a database of products, with prices and costs, descriptions of the products, etc. When they sell something, there¿s a barcode reader at the cash register that checks that product out of their inventory and generates a receipt for their customer." If they wanted to put that shop on the Net, they¿d want to do pretty much the same thing. A customer would be able to pay for the product online, and the inventory would be decreased by the number of items purchased. The online customer would want to know that the product was in inventory, and when they could expect delivery. The online customer would pay about the same way as in the shop. They¿ll pay for the item with a credit card, PayPal, or will want to send the money from bank account to bank account. They'd want to know their information was secure; and the shop owner would want to limit their exposure to that information. I do all of that. I tie the online shop to the store inventory using the same database. I can design the database, and even tie it into accounting packages. I set up the secure connection for the purchases. If the shop is part of a franchise or a group of local shops, I can link them all into one network. In addition, I set up the online shop to be found on the Net by search engines, and other ways that the shop can be visible to customers: SEO and SEM. I¿ll work with the shop owner to lay out an online marketing plan and set some realistic goals for the number of visitors to their website and the number of sales they expect. I¿ll also work with the shop owner to try to increase sales or figure out why they aren¿t making their sales goals by analyzing the way people use their website. That¿s what I do: I design the databases and set them up to be accessible to the online shop, then lay out the website to be visible to the Net. I¿m not really a website designer; I¿m a web programmer or developer. I work with a web designer to accomplish the goals of the business (or organization, school, whatever.) Unlike a web designer, my first questions are: ¿What are the goals of the site?¿ and ¿How does the website integrate into your business?¿ Before I came to STHS, age 14, I had lived on both coasts and many places in between. I estimated at the time that I'd lived in 23 states: NYC, Philadelphia, Dallas, Los Angeles, and many more. The family in Texas always wondered if we would ever settle down. I've pretty much kept up that wanderlust throughout my life. After high school, I took a year to work at the casinos, then j...Expand for more
oined the USArmy. I wanted to learn something I didn't think I could teach myself, and the Army offered to teach me Russian. I did well in language school, which allowed me to take an advanced class in Russian. Then the Army sent me to Germany for two years. I'd studied German and Spanish at STHS. While in Germany, I lived in German and worked in Russian. I spoke English only about an hour a day. At language school, I established my lifetime average: 93%. It seems to be what I get in everything. I did the electronic spy thing for the Army Security Agency. Returning, I bounced from job to job all over northern California for a few years. I did everything from insurance sales to ditch digging. The time at MIFS was as a student and tutor in Russian and German. After completing a course as an HVAC tech a few years later., I found my niche: computers. My resume reads like a history of programming in microcomputers, networking, and the Internet. I did BASIC before there was structured programming; LISP before databases; PROLOG, etc. Since about 1994-96, I've been working on the Net: developing websites and marketing them. As usual, I wandered from one new technology, programming language, and philosophy to the next. In between tech jobs, I've taken on all sorts of other vocations. I've lived in the UK a couple of times; Germany twice counting the Army; and now Australia. I've lived, worked in, or visited many countries, and I'm not done yet. I'll probably post some of my pictures from a trip to New Zealand a couple of years ago on here. In 2000, I moved to Australia seeking love and adventure. There is a saying "It ain't an adventure if you know where you're going." That pretty well sums up my time in Australia. I probably should have done the adventuring when I was younger. (insert wry laughter here) I've been here over 8 years. I'm an Internet expert. If it has to do with the Web, I've probably done something with it, or plan to. I do Windows .NET, Java, and PHP. (Unless you're into that stuff, you probably won't recognize the terms.) I can develop interactive community websites, then market them to the search engines. I'm a certified and experienced corporate trainer in most major desktop applications from Adobe, Microsoft, and Open Source - always with a view towards the Net and connnectivity. The jobs have gotten more prestigious as time goes on. The technology has matured. I'm not sure I have sometimes. I don't seem to be able to lose my enthusiasm and fascination with it all. My hobbies are newspapers, science, technology, and art. I roam the art shops and galleries of every city. Politics is a great source of wry, sarcastic conversation and humor. My fascination with science will never end, I suppose. I still read SciAm and the aussie version, COSMOS. I'm fascinated by the different perspectives of people from different cultures, especially how so many cultures seem to misunderstand America and the people of the US. George W has done no American overseas any good.
