Paul's Story
I was a candidate for Student Body President. There was an assembly for the three candidates to
present their "platform". Two girls presented theirs, very specific. I started, "How many people here
think of this as a place of surprise, raise your hand" " How many people here have ever had an
experience of surprise at Marina?" Ok. So I'm not going to tell you my platform. I'm not going to
tell myself my platform. I my not going to tell my platform. Our campaign slogans are: "Dunno:
"Got Me" "Whatever" ""What Party!"
The Asian Penmenship Club designed my.iyr posters. "VOTE PAULIE. HE DOESNT KNOW EITHER?"
FOR A CLUELESS MARINA, VOTE PAULIE. HE WOULDNT KNOW IF HE KNEW.. OUR OFFICIAL
GESTURE WAS THE SHRUG. WE SENT OUT OUR VOLUNTEERS. "HEARD ANYTHING???"

There was an Assembly the day before. Teachers and tight-ass students were challenging a candidate with a a program. Our gang went aroumd the local churches schools,dlubs, gathering old programs. You'd exchange Shrugs with other party members. People had crazy shirts with slogans. "Go Know. Not me"

I wore my button on the stage, "If I told you, I'd have to kill you." We planted some questions for the other candidates. "What time should lunch hour begin." Very specific. Me, Whenever.
The next day, for the election, about 100 core dunces came into school, like brooding, looking down, distressed,.
They were trying to Know. A number went to the infirmary. You'd hear, "O NO" There was anaswer somewhere.
An hour before time to vote, I put out a bulletin. "SEVEN SURPRISES" .. WE MADE THE promise.
That was about it. I won about 7-1, I changed the name from School President to School Resident.. because we basicaly hung there. And I released the great banner between two rooms across the hall. It was our slogan for next yearL
