Paul's Story
Life
Hello everybody,
Like most of you I've been on a long and winding road since 1956. I went from Fortier to Chicago to Elmhurst College, where I graduated in 1960 with a BA in Philosophy and English. I then went to seminary in St. Louis to study for the Christian Ministry at Eden Theological Seminary, where I was in the class which graduated in 1964. However, while at Eden I began working in a Christian Coffeehouse located in St. Louis' Gaslight Square (at that time a sort of miniature Bourbon St.) So after graduation from seminary I remained at the coffeehouse as Director and Manager, and continued in that capacity until 1969. I wrote a few folk songs during that period. Then, I began working for University of Missouri in St. Louis (UMSL) as Director of an Adult Basic Education and GED program. I did that until 1973 when I finally moved back to New Orleans (my widowed mother's health was failing and she seemed to want me close). I worked in the health field, loosely affiliated with LSU Medical School, as a grants writer until 1976 when I was finally ordained into the ministry and began my 33 year career as a local pastor. I have been pastor of 4 New Orleans congregations, St. Matthew UCC 1333 So, Carrollton, Trinity Evangelical UCC 4439 Canal St., First Evangelical Church 5212 So. Claiborne Ave, and finally in 1991 I became pastor of First Trinity Evangelical United Church of Christ where I have labored til the present time. Our church location is 3810 Power Blvd, Metairie and we worship in conjunction with Faith Cumberland Presbyterian Church. I married Rosemary (she is from Michigan near Kalamazoo) in 1976 and we have 3 daughters, Sara, age 30, attorney in Boston, Elizabeth age 28, schoolteacher in Wash. DC, and Leah, age 26 (recent Tulane grad, '06) accountant and CPA apprenticewith DeLoitte, Inc, for a while in Wash. DC, and last 6 months back in N.O. Two are still single (Sara and Leah) and one is recently married (Elizabeth: I was able to do the ceremony -- WOW!) I am wistfully hoping to be a grandpa some day soon, real soon!! 3 years ago Rosemary quit her career as a Bank Trust Officer and procured employment with the Orleans Parish School Board and began teaching 8th grade at Henderson Elemen...Expand for more
tary in Algiers; she later moved to Jefferson Parish for better working conditions, and now teaches in Marerro, La. at a middle school for gifted children. In 2006 we got a new puppy, Phoebe, a golden Lab who is now 3 yearas old and is sweet, clever, playful and fun to be around. She also chews a lot on pillows and chair cushions. At 70 I am considered a little past my prime for pastoring a congregation, but nevertheless I plan to remain at my post at least a couple more years or until the economy stabilizes. I don't think it will be too much longer before I am sure I will be positively ready to "pack it in". One of my passions is summer church camp and every year I take 6 - 10 youngsters from the congregation to New Braunfels Texas for a week of outdoors living at Slumber Falls Church Camp along the Guadalupe River. I have made over 30 such summer trips over the years. I usually volunteer as counselor, chaplain or guitar player and song leader if I am needed which turns out to be most of the time. On our most recent trip, we had a wonderful week, and on the return trip on the outskirts of Houston Texas on I-10 our church van sputtered out and stalled, and as I was calling AAA for a tow truck I noticed a whiff of smoke beneath the 15 passenger Ford van, and I immediately ordered all 6 of the young people out of the van and called 911 for a fire truck. The Firemen arrived within 5 minutes, but it was too late. The van was completely engulfed in flames as they pulled up. We all got out safely and no one was harmed, but all luggage from a week at camp was destroyed along with cameras, cell phones, pictures, souvenirs, guitars, Bibles, clothing, swim suits, etc. As we watched the van meltdown I was reminded of the 23rd Psalm, "even tho I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for Thou art with me, Thy rod and thy staff comfort me." I've grown a little since most of you have seen me, not in height but in girth. If I had been on the boxing team at Fortier I would have been considered a feather weight. If I were on a boxing team today, I'd be considered a heavy weight. I'll let you all do the math. Looking forward enthusiastically to hearing from everyone. Go Tarpons, go Bluejays.
