Paul's Story

Life In Houston, TX on LinkedIn and google searches for my name. Drop me a line! TSU Ph.D. program in Urban Planning and Environmental Policy. I hope to graduate in a couple of years. My parents both eventually attained their Masters in Education, retired, and remain in their N. Muskegon home, aging in place. My parents continue their 20th century lifestyle unabated, believing in the middle class, the protestant work ethic, the Christian religion, the GOP, and enjoying cruises to various US and world destinations. Dad draws caricatures for fun and profit. I was born in Saginaw, MI, USA in 1962 while my parents lived in the upper unit of a 2-story duplex. 14 months later, when my sister Diana was born, my family built a new single-story home in the little dirt-street suburb of Carrollton, MI and painted it light blue. I attended a little Lutheran school named Messiah for Kindergarten and first grade, in Mrs. Kleinschmidt's room for both years. She'd criticise me in Kindergarten for always wanting to turn around and learn what she was teaching the first-graders when I should have been happily coloring, playing or napping. This was an early indicator of undiagnosed ADD. I remember winning the 1st grade spelling bee, having correctly spelled "television", with the word "worm". I had to go to the bathroom so badly during the entire competition as it went round and round, that I probably spelled the final word correctly as much for urinary relief as for any other reason. I hadn't counted on the excitement of winning however, and as I immediately sped toward the bathroom, my pants filled with unwelcomed warmth. How embarrassing. My formative influences were #1, experiencing construction men and heavy equipment that built our house and a superhighway at the other end of our block. #2, the moonshot from Mercury Friendship 7 to the Apollo 11 landing and beyond. #3, Detroit Tigers baseball, culminating in the 1968 penant. (Result= big holes and towers fascinate me, and anything is possible). My second grade year began in North Muskegon Elementary, after our family had again expanded with my brother T...Expand for more
im's birth in 1968. We moved to Moulton Ave. in North Muskegon because my mother's parents were lifelong Muskegon residents, and Dad had landed a job teaching in the Reeths-Puffer School District north of Bear Lake. I remember how uncomfortable we all were when we were forced to square dance up on the stage in music class. Feeling diminutive I looked for the shortest girl I could find, and was suddenly enamoured with Karen Garber! ... My favorite class of all time was Mrs. Julie's 4th grade. Suddenly, the world expanded to its proper dimensions. ... What guy didn't fall in love with Ms. Kirtley sometime between 5th and 7th grade? ... In High School I loved association with the geeks of our grade, smart students who also carried budding musical or artistic talent. In an art class with Mr. Zuder, I discovered that architecture might be worth investigation. I also ran up against the great divide that separated the college prep track from the manual skills track. From 10th to 12th grade the visual arts were out, and music, music, music was in. At graduation I remember my entire satisfaction in tying grade point average with the wonderful Liebe Rockwood, which put me in league with the top mental horsepower of Brian Hubble, Paul Halverson and Karen Garber. ... Colleges in Ann Arbor, MI: Concordia and University of Michigan. Currently pursuing a doctoral degree at Texas Southern University (an HBCU) in Houston, TX. You can see my resume for an outline of what lay between by googling "Paul Suckow". In 1990 I married a Filipina, Donna Diao, that I met at U-M in the final year of my Master of Architecture studies in urban design. No kids. She's a Licensed Master Social Worker with Advanced Clinical Practice at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She's finished a 6-year stint in the brain/spine tumor service, at last succumbing to a managerial position with 22 oncological social workers under her able guidance. I began working in a professional planning capacity again in August 2008, for Harris County, Texas. We live in Southwest Houston, and I'd love to hear from any of you that remember me from years gone by.
