For those of you who remember me as a Latin scholar, surprisingly enough, I did not go on to college right away. Instead, I went to work in a bank and was promoted several times over a four-year period. It was an education in itself. When I was about 19 years old, I read Elizabeth Elliots Through Gates of Splendor, which profoundly affected me, reawakening a long-held interest in Christian missions. At 23 I went to the University of Oklahoma to study linguistics, followed by field training in Chiapas, Mexico. I worked in Guatemala under Wycliffe Bible Translators in the early 70s, working with a team of linguists studying minority Mayan languages and assisting in Bible translation and literacy work.
