Paulette's Story
Life
Lived in Berryland on N. 41st Street, near the playground. Fourth grade at St. Albert's Catholic School, then to Carleton [Miss Lewandowski, Mrs. Hansen], Edison Jr High [Mr. Crivello home room], John Muir Jr High [O.B. Sarten, Jr. for math] & Custer HS in Milwaukee, WI,. Best friend; Dorothy Howard. Did hunger hike with Sandy, Kristy, Kathy, Rhonda, Dorothy, Jennifer & Cheryl W., Debbie, Kathy K. and others when in 7th grade. Loved laughing at Grady Turner's jokes, miss Derek Taylor, Bruce Smith, Reed Murrel, Lester & Debbie MacDowell, Ruby, Tammy Marshallek, Chantal, Robin W., others.
Went to teen club on 36th & Villard Saturday nights to dance. I was a nerd-type, but got branded a trouble maker. Moved to San Jose, CA in August 1973. Graduated from W.C. Overfelt HS June '75. Joined Army to "see the world" after marrying my first husband - but was expecting our daughter, so left service to be wife, mother & later, divorcee.
Returned to Milwaukee's south side off Greenfield August 1980.
Met second husband, had first son, second daughter, worked for a time as an interpreter w/Victim/Witness Services out of the Milwaukee DA's office [under E. Michael McCann] as hubby was always in conflict w/the law. Left him, went back to San Jose while expecting 2nd son [our 3rd child together, my 4th child].
Had 3rd daughter [5th child at age 31. Went back to school at 37, got AS degree in paralegal studies a month before 40th b-day, made the college honor society as well as national paralegal honor society.[alpha epsilon chi] Whoopi! yeah, right.

No longer with spouse - bad choice, a guest at San Quentin for a few years, granted citizenship after release. Separated in '98. I'm medical translator/interpreter at the County Hospital Health System. My oldest [28] is married and had her first child 2 months ago. Don't drink, smoke, party. Work, go home to my kids. Love music [yes, even Hip hop, rap & underground rap - but can't handle techno or 'house' - makes my nerves jump]
Love to dance merengue, salsa, latin jazz.

Went back to school at the age of 37, [first time in college] and graduated before 40 with my AS degree. Was working full time up the Peninsula in San Mateo as a stand-in manager for AVON Products, would usually take one or more of my children to class with me. A few were more thoughtful than some of my classmates when we discussed topical issues [O.J. Simpson, the McDonald's coffee suit]. Then of course, home to the kids and all of that. I carried minimum 12 units per semester, primarily legal studies [Criminal, American, Constitutional, Business & Contract, Civil Litigation & Ethics]
Campus set up perfectly to shake the cobwebs out between classes - mountain setting, with creek running through campus, lots of trees, plants, and math separated from English, separated from science, etc., by pathways and blackberry bushes and nature.
I would love to be able to go back again, get a BS or Masters, teach or work as a counselor or something.
