Paulo's Story

Life After graduating from Vandalia Butler High School in May 1974, I returned to my home town, Joao Pessoa, in Brazil to complete my high school studies. The same year I began to work as a reviewer in a local paper. In 1975, besides being a senior at Colegio Pio X (a catholic high school), I worked as an English teacher at Fisk language school, and took entrance exams to university. In 1976,I was a sophomore in Electrical Engineering at Paraiba Federal University (UFPB) in Campina Grande city and also worked for Bank of Brazil in Itabaiana city. In 1977, I quit my job at Bank of Brazil, moved to Campina Grande city, continued my undegrad studies, took a job as English teacher at Fisk Schools and as teacher assistant at UFPB. In Jan. 1981, I took a job as Microwaves instructor at Redentorista Vocational School. In Aug. 1981, I took an engineering internship at Bahia Telecommunications (Telebahia) in Salvador city. In Jan. 1982, I graduated in Electrical Engineering and started a masters' degree in Production Engineering. In July 1982, I was hired as engineer by Telebahia to be based in Itabuna city. In Feb. 1983, I quit my job at Telebahia and joined Paraiba Federal Vocational-Technical School (ETFPB) as an instructor. In 1987, I completed my masters' degree and started to work part time as a consultant for the Ministry of Education of Brazil (MEC, Brazilian USDE). During one year I also worked for Bank of Brazil (1989-1990). At ETFPB, from Feb. 1983 until March 1995, besides teaching, I took several positions as laboratory and program coordinator, students selection committee president, support and extension department director, and planning department director. In March 1995, I was temporarily released by ETFPB to work as adviser to the Substitute National Assistant Secretary for Secondary and Vocational and Technical (SEMTEC) at MEC. In Jan. 1999, ETFPB becomes Paraiba Federal Technological Education Center (CEFET-PB), being also allowed to offer technical and bachelor's and teaching degrees. In May 1999, I completed my doctoral degree at OSU and returned to MEC in Brasilia. I was put in charge of Technical Programs Accreditation for Brazil. In Feb. 2002, I was appointed as interim General Director for Para state CEFET to bring its operation to regular grounds. In Nov. 2002, I completed my task in Para and returned to Brasilia to become Head of Staff for the National Assistant Secretary for SEMTEC-MEC until March 2003. In the same month, I returned to my job as instructor at CEFET-PB. Brazil was under a new Presidential Administration, and I preferred to return home. Until May 2008, I taught in undergraduate and graduate programs at CEFET-PB. In May 2008, I was put in charge of an International Cooperation Project between Brazil and USA at CEFET-PB. In November 2008, I was appointed Institutional Planning Director for CEFET-PB. In December 2008, CEFET-PB becomes Paraiba Federal Institute for Education, Science and Technology (IFPB). In March 2009, I was invited for the position of Pro-rector (Vice President) for Instrution and in May to also was appointed Substitute Rector (President) for IFPB. Presently I continue to work part time for MEC in various projects. I have married, and have two step kids, 4 brothers, 1 sister, 10 nephews and 1 niece. My mother is alive and in good health. I live in Joao Pessoa, Paraiba state, northeast of Brazil. Two of my brothers live in the southeast of Brazil. I travel very often to other brazilian cities and states, and eventually abroad. I have been many times to USA, and a few times to Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Mexico, Panama, Venezuela, Hungary, United Kingdom, and Italy. Welcome to 2014 World Cup in Brazil and to 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
