Peggy's Story

Life My Kids Three daughters, 6 grand children (3 of each), 2 great granddaughters and a great grandson. My Job I retired from Federal Civil Service (24 Feb 05) and am having a great time with no alarm clocks or office hours! Lived on the MS Gulf Coast until Hurricane Katrina hit. Got repairs made, put the house on the market and moved to NE TN in Jan 06. Really like the mountains and the people are very nice... plus, it's not as windy here as it was on the coast. I was glued to the Weather Channel this year tho with Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. I still have relatives on the MS Gulf Coast, and my youngest daughter lives in Houston. The fear never goes away. but now I don't have to prepare for, evacuate from and clean up after any more hurricanes! Now it's my turn to worry about loved ones in harm's way. Sep 09: I went down to MS the end of April 09 to attend the New Orleans Jazz Fest with my sister and brother-in-law. It was great. I really do miss the culture on the coast. It's unlike any I'd experienced previously, and I knew it the minute I arrived in Biloxi! I enjoyed it for the 17 years I lived there; being there made every day seem like a holiday. I hopefully will move back one day, but maybe not right on the coast... although that's where I'd prefer to be. It's a conundrum, which hopefully I'll find the answer to one day soon. I really miss my sister too... we did a lot of things together before Katrina and actually evacuated to Houston together before the hurricane. The coast seems to be recovering, although I did get semi-lost on Hwy 90 along the beach. There are few of the older buildings left along the beach... very few guideposts, so didn't know where I was half the time, except that I was on the beach road heading west from Biloxi towards Gulfport. The coast is healing, new businesses located away from the beach; casinos built on land near the beach; old businesses and restaurants relocated to a safer zone; locals recovering. Maybe I'm healing and recovering too. I like where I am now; I've been here almost 4 years, but I miss MS. It was home. UPDATE: April (10): I visited the coast the end of April this year to attend the Jazz Fest again, but also to look at real estate in several areas in MS and LA for the purpose of moving back near my sister... but insurance is so high in the 6 lowest coast counties that it wouldn't be wise for me to move back...I wouldn't be close to her anyway, so I'm staying in TN. I've been here over 4 years and really like this area and my house and I'm making friends through my gym and other activities. It's a go...Expand for more
od place to be at this point in time. Update: 3 Feb 2012: Will be going to the coast for Mardi Gras this month and also plan to go back the end of April for the New Orleans Jazz Fest. The Beach Boys are making the Jazz Fest their first stop on their 50 stop reunion tour this year! I hope I get close enough to actually see them on stage! I got my picture taken with the Beach Boys (minus Brian Wilson), Bruce Johnston and Mike Love, in May 05 when they appeared at the Casino Magic in Waveland, MS! That picture is hanging in my office! :o) I really miss that part of being on the coast... being able to see various stars appearing at the casinos. I went to every Johnny Rivers concert at the Grand and every Aerosmith concert at the coliseum, plus a whole lot in between! Also got kissed by Bobby Vinton at his Isle of Capri show one year! Sigh........ :o) There's lots of music being made in this area, but I miss the coast and the opportunities it provided in the way of music and festivals. I was in MS the first week or so of December and it's built up quite nice now... lots of new commercial and home construction completed and occupied. I sure hope no more huge hurricanes like Katrina hit the coast again... for a long long time, anyway. They've come a long way from the destruction that was evident when I left the coast. It was heartbreaking. It's like the Phoenix... rising from the ashes..... Have looked at coast houses for sale online, and found that real estate taxes are horrendous! Most were over $350 per MONTH!!! I think insurance is going down a bit, but property tax rates have skyrocketed due to the destruction of the tax base during Katrina. I don't know if it'll ever return to pre-Katrina rates. It'll keep me off the coast, for sure, at the present rate. Have recently taken up Zumba at my gym and really enjoy it. I go to the gym 4-5 times per week, training and now Zumba. My daughter and granddaughter were up from GA for a few days this week and went to Zumba and gym with me. We had a great time. My daughter is getting certified this month to be a Zumba instructor. She and my grandson are planning to walk the Appalachian Trail this summer from GA to MA! They're both so excited about their hike! My granddaughter will be staying with me while they're hiking. We'll be available for re-supplying any items they might need when they get close to this area and also further into VA. We're planning to meet them at Clingman's Dome near Gatlinberg to visit and resupply. It'll be a great summer! :o) Interesting, to say the least!
