Penny's Story
Life
Thirty-three and fabulous. What more can I say? Just kidding! I'm a hard working Mom of two kids - ages 13 & 12. They're at the age of trying to be independent and I'm at the stage of trying to hang on to them.
My son, the oldest, is into inline skating, skateparks, basketball, track and video games. He also plays the sax. He's the quiet one, but when he does speak up, watch out. He has a quick wit and often has us bending over with laughter on a regular basis. He is also one who never forgets anything, so we never make statments or promises we can't keep as he is there to remind us.
My daughter sings, often solos, publicly. She also plays the violin. She's quite the social butterfly. This year she's been busy with cheerleading and basketball. On the side she cooks, cleans and plays mentor to a bunch of younger neighborhood kids. Her favorite past time is shopping with her friends. She's the girly-girl that I have never been.
Other than that, I'm the same ol', same ol'. Just doing the Momma and work thing and whatever I find necessary in-between.
I can be found in my space under my name Penny Simiyu or in the world of the ya - hoo's under simply underscore penny underscore lyn.
School
High school brings back a flood of both good and bad memories. All I can say is "I survived".
College
College began with 2 years at NDSU (general studies), then I got my CNA (certfified Nursing Assistant) licensure through the North Dakota State Board of Health, then I went to Interstate Business College and made it 3/4 through when the school ...Expand for more
was closed down as the owners were misappropriating funds (our tuition). Then, I went to a six month social organizing apprenticehsip out in St. Paul, MN and I learned a lot. From there it was on to grant writing at MSUM. After that, it was on to get my Associates at Aakers Business College...Legal Executive Administrative Assistant. Since then, it's been classes here and there as I feel the needs...so nonprofit management and what-not through North Dakota State College of Science, etc.
Education, for me, is never ending. I love to learn and I find it opens quite a few doors.
Workplace
I worked as a CNA in private home health for three years, from there it was onto office/administrative work, then community organizing (think pickets, rallies and protests...I got paid to organize those) and public education (I taught). After that, more office work, social service type work, 3 years at an administrative outsourcing business and then onto Legal and Corporate affairs at a major software company. That wasn't for me and so I am now working 3 part-time jobs, primarily for the flexibility that I need to raise my kids. I do alright...make enough to make ends meet and we aren't lacking when it comes to entertainment and extras.
My jobs? I work part-time at an alcohol and drug treatment center. I work part-time at a facility that serves as an alternative to juvenile detention. I work part-time as a Church Secretary. All three are a far stretch from the corporate world I've been working in and they pay less, but I find the work so much more rewarding.
