Peter's Story
Life:
After Graduate School at the University of Cincinnati (MPA) I started my career as a City Manager in North Carolina. I married a southern girl 45 years ago and have two adult children. One child is Ivy League educated while the other is ACC school educated. Each has their MBA..
When I was working in NC I was also an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate School of Public Administration at North Carolina State University. I am a Charter member of a Boys and Girls Club as well as being a Big Brother in the Big Brother Big Sister program. Before I got married I was a high school/college basketball referee. While I was living and working in North Carolina we owned an ocean going sail boat and kept it at the coast.
In the early 70's and again in the early 80's I took leave from public service to live and work as a consultant in Asia and in Saudi Arabia/Africa..
I worked for more than 35 years in local government in North Carolina, South Carolina, Minnesota, and Virginia. In 2007 I tried retirement. Frankly I feel that I still have too much to give to this world before I go. I'd rather die trying than sit and wait. You either participate in this life or watch it; and I'd rather participate. It is all too much fun.
I volunteer as a Court appointed "Guardian ad Litem" (a guardian for minor children) and as a student mentor in High School. I am a lifelong Rotarian.
While married my wife was the Marketing Manager for a Division of IBM and worked from home. She has served on the symphony board, a patron of the Art Museum, as well as established and directed a high school student mentoring program for over 1000 dropout students when we lived in the Raleigh NC area.(Update) I was divorced in early 2011. .
Before the divorce I enjoyed spending time on the boat(picture)going up and down the east coast and to the islands with friends. The boat was liquidated at the time of th...Expand for more
e divorce. I have a Labradoodle dog who travels with me(pictures). I also enjoy international travel, having visited all the continents except two. Recently I've been to Europe several times. I lived in Italy for a summer and visited Africa again as well as China, Japan and the Far
East again( I lived in Hong Kong back in the 70's). I am also a published amateur photographer. Over the years I have taken more than 35,000 photographs of the people and places I have been.
I spent April and May in Italy this year(2014) getting to know the people of Italy. My friend and I studied conversational Italian before we left. We had a car and drove 2500 miles while there, and only visited Venice as a tourist city. Lots of back roads and meals in local trattoria's. I took 3500 pictures but deleted 2500 of them before we got home. The next trip will be to France and England to 6-8 weeks next year.
Since the divorce I have simplified my life. I have found a new friend that I enjoy immensly. We travel to some of my old haunts and find new ones. We usually make at least one international and several domestic trips each year. This year (2014) we went to Italy just after Easter and returned in time for Memorial Day. We drove more than 2000 miles and did not visit any of the large tourist cities. A fabulous trip with great food, friends, and wine. She has brought joy to my life and we enjoy each other's families. I would not have thought it possible to date at my mature age, but you are really never too old to start again. Age is just a number and not an attitude.
Generally my health has been good. I have had both knees and a shoulder replaced. The original injury to my left knee happened playing basketball in college.
.
I hope everyone is enjoying and making a difference in this world. This is our ONLY chance. Start again if you have to!!!!!!
