Peter's Story
Life
After high school I accomplished very little; a couple lame jobs and hanging out at Denny's until the sun came up.
But, then one day I just called a Navy recruiter. I've been in since December 1997. I like my job enough that I re-enlisted in December 2001 for six more years only 2 days after getting advanced to the paygrade of E-5. My rate (job) is Gunner's Mate. I worked on a Mark 45 Mod 4 5"/62 Caliber Light Weight Gun Mount. It's a hydraulic nightmare, but I like the dirty work. "A clean uniform is a sign of someone who has no job." I've been to the Caribbean a few times, all over the southern half of Europe, even to a war zone. (Does anyone remember Kosovo?) Now, I was stationed in San Diego. I'm now in Fallon, NV, where I will be for three years working with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Detachment in charge of Ammo Administration (mainly inventorying bullets and explosives). I'm loving my job here. I also work on 4-wheelers and anything else mechanical that I can get my hands on. I'm happy that the love of my life decided to move down here. We got married on 19Sep04. It was a small ceremony, but it got the job done.
Well, things change. My marriage didn't take long to fall apart. She moved back to Yakima in June '06. My divorce was final 11 Dec 06. Life goes on.
I'm currently working at NAS Fallon Security Detachment running the Armory and working in the Training Division. I leave in April to go back to San Diego to join the crew of the USS Antietam CG-54.
School
Last I checked, I had accumulated 33 credits just by standing watch, working on my equipment, getting qualified to do different jobs, and going to Navy schools. The last time I checked was in Novembe...Expand for more
r of 2000. I've been to numerous schools since then.
Workplace
I worked for a transmission shop for a couple months in high school. I worked in a restaurant for two weeks after high school. After that I was lost for a couple years on what I wanted to do. I even moved to Spokane twice but ended up back in Yakima.

Military
I joined to be in submarines, but failed the psychiatric evaluation. I chose Electrician's Mate but got dropped from the school. I was an undesignated Fireman onboard USS Ross (DDG-71) for 2 years before becoming a Gunner's Mate and eventually pre-commissioning USS McCampbell (DDG-85) where I ran the Mark 45 Mod 4 5"/62 Caliber Light Weight Gun Mount. Now, I'm on shore duty in Fallon, NV.
I'm the Ammunition Administrator for an Explosive Ordnance Disposal detachment. I also work on the 4-wheelers that we take out on the bombing ranges looking for bombs that didn't blow up. It's dangerous, but what fun job isn't?
