Peter's Story

Looking back on it now, it becomes plainly evident that my life has no straight lines. I graduated from Golden West College at nineteen with an Associate of Arts degree in English. After that, I accepted a position at Carden Academy of Huntington Beach teaching Technology (computers) k-8th, and Remedial 8th grade English Lit. The work is immensely gratifying, but I’m still young. There are just some life experiences I’ve missed, and that’s something I shall have to remedy. I’m not all that ready to settle into a lifelong career either... more than that; there is this longing in the pit of my stomach. This sense that I’ve never seen the world beyond my front door as more than a tourist, and it pains me. Sitting in a UCLA extensions film class at UCI, I’ve decided to quit. I have no real plan in mind, and I don't much care what I do, so long as it gives me a story to tell and things to see. Update 2001: After a few weeks of unemployment fuelled late nights and a lot of video games, I’ve taken a position with an AV company called ShowGear. It’s an amazing time! I now live a life of travel. I get to see every inch of the contiguous from the road. Meeting new people, seeing new places; filling my little black books with stories and sketches. I’m reading a lot of Kerouac and feeling like I’m walking in some familiar footprints – to be fair, my retread has less booze and more comic books - as I explore my authenticity. Update 2003: It’s been two and a half years since I started doing the travel thing. Ma’ has recently fallen ill. The country seems less significant when the only family that’s important to me is in the hospital. I recently left Show Gear on bad terms. Depending on who you ask I was either fired or quit. Living without roots has been growing tiresome anyway. My old boss called in a favor and found me an AV job locally at one of ShowGear's local competitors, Matrix. As a local provider, they’re a bit more forgiving with my schedule, while I help take care of Ma’. I think I’m a good fit here, and I plan to move into leadership soon, Update 2004: Unfortunately Matrix too would not last. While onsite in Anaheim doing a teardown for a show, an accident with some gear dragged me under a truck. I tore my trapezius and herniated a disk in my neck in the process. Learning how to use my dominant arm again is a nightmare. If my girlfriend Sirandyn weren't here during my recovery, I'd be a total mess. ng at the 'Trix. It had become a paycheck and little else at the end, and they didn't take very good care of me while I was recovering. When I get back into fighting shape, Matrix will be the last job I will ever work just to pay the bills. My travels and my girl have introduced me to the idea that my talents will be better served working in the video game industry. The more I ponder on it, the more I realize how on the mark she is. I'd always been writing and drawing and gaming, how could I have missed such an obvious direction? Update 2005: Now the NDA I just signed prohibits me from telling you what company I work for, or my title, so I'll leave the guessing up to those of you who care enough to read this far down the page. Update 2007: I’m still in gaming, working for the same company, and I’ve been climbing the ladder. I’m about to move cross-country to my new home in Austin, TX. Sirandyn is from there, so it must be providence. As I sit here in my temperature controlled office looking back; I can tell you I'm happy, where I need to be, and the story continues at pace with no complaints, and no regrets! Update 2014: After nearly a decade working for Blizzard Entertainment (since I don't work there anymore, I can share the name), I’m leaving. A Legal Tech Company (Precision Discovery) in the Denver Metro area has poached me to become their Managing Director of eDiscovery Operations. It's a chance for me to work with an old friend in an entirely new space, with new demands and nuances to grapple. Though my long-term plan is to go off and start a game company of my own at some point, before I can do that, I need to understand the intricacies of business finance better. Getting to know the ins and outs of PnL and a hand full of behind the scenes math and authority should give me the know-how and pedigree I need to make that long-term goal a reality. This role is a means to an end, but I hope it’ll be a good time. Update 2017: Attorneys are not for me. Met some great people, did some great things, both were the exception in this industry. PD let me go as part of a series of layoffs after a buyout. While I am angry about the circumstances, I’m not sad about it. I’ll be moving cross-country, back to good ol' Texas before the ink is dry on my last check. I miss the creative energy that buzzed around me at Blizzard, and I am determined to see it flourish in something of my own making. So, with four of the most talented people I know, I've founded a company and set to work. 2018 will be the year of Myopic Studios. Wish me luck!
