Peter Landers:

CLASS OF 1970
Willoughby, OH

Peter's Story

My Dad moved to Willoughby in the summer of 1968. I attended 7th grade at Immaculate Conception, and half of eighth grade. Mr. Moore was my eighth grade teacher and he loved opera. I was an emotional child, alternately shy and expressive (they would call me hyperactive). I loved the opera that Mr. Moore played for us -- reading through the librettos -- seeing all those foreign words. I learned to sing some of those arias and even was allowed to sit in the classroom when everyone else went out to recess. My folks bought me some albums and, when we moved bacl to upstate New York partway through the eighth grade, Mr. M...Expand for more
oore gave me some records from his collection. That spring I road the Greyhound bus from upstate New York back to Willoughby and stayed a week with a family who lived close to the school so that I could attend the Met's travelling troupe's performances of Pagliacci and Cavalleria Rusticana. Those were wonderful days. I still sing, but I have never sung in an opera. I credit Mr. Moore for opening my heart to beauty, which was really significant for my growth. I have since become a writer and an amateur musician. If there were ever a way to say thank you to Mr. Moore, I would do it. But it has been nearly forty years.
