Peter's Story

You'd know me as the "Christmas Man", or that guy who wears that crazy Christmas Tree Scarf! I still do, but not as often. I went to Bible College for Christian Education in Maryland, and have been working in Youth Ministry ever since (23 years). Now I'm married, have an adorable little son, and dont really have time for much else so enjoying the simple things like going for walks, and sleeping are luxuries for me. I've served as a missionary in Pakistan, Odessa Ukraine, and Istanbul Turkey, as well as Baltimore. I visit Scarborough about every year, usually around Christmas hoping to find some snow on the ground, and let people enjoy the "Christmas Scarf". Several people have asked, "how long do you plan to wear that scarf, and why do you wear it at all, and do you wash it?" 1. I plan to wear the scarf as long as my neck and back can handle it. 3. I disassemble, wash, and re-assemble it every year. Fortunately I have 4 versions of the scarf that give me a little flexibility. I've actually had 7 versions since 1988, and gave 3 of them away....but one was "lost". I have the 1st gen. in Scarborough. 2. To answer "Why, I feel I have to tell you how it came about in the 1st place: I used to idolize Dr. Who, the old Tom Baker version. One chilly day in October I was going though some old clothes in the basement I came upon an old, knitted scarf, red/orange/white stripped. I thought, "This is cool", I'll wear it. (((NOW, let me say that I was NEVER into style like my brother Jason was, in fact, I would wear shorts year round if I could get away with it.))) So...I wore it to school, and pretty much everywhere. December came and I had gotten into the habit of hanging pens, and other odd trinkets on it for quick access. Well, about a week into December, Mrs. Williams was putting up her "yearly Christmas decor", and I thought...."Why NOT?". So rushed home (cant really do that on Roger Neilson's bus, but its about intent). I found some old ...Expand for more
Christmas Lights and started pushing them through the knitting. Voila! The Christmas Scarf was born! I remember the day I sat at the back of Mr. Hebert's English Class, and plugged in the scarf! that was the shortest English Class I'd ever been in. It was crazy warm though...with all those Christmas Lights. Then I thought, hey, it needs more! Decorations! Candy! So I used some paper clips and fastened some glass bulbs and some brach's strawberry hard-candy to it. During the next few weeks you could see pieces of colored-glass bulbs littering the hallway, with an occasional candy wrapper here-and-there. From that time on, it became a hobby of mine to see how many lights I could get onto the scarf, and make it better every year. I wore it to Happy Wheels Roller skating, in the Maine Mall, Work at Burger King (put it away), and even to Church (they loved it). When I came to Maryland it was just 2nd nature to wear it to classes, youth ministry, on public transportation, work, and pretty much everywhere! Most people loved the idea, and a few thought I was mentally unstable....unstable....unstable. Once a lady at the checkout counter said she'd pay me to make her a scarf. At 83 years old, I thought, "she cant handle a big scarf, I'll have to make a slimmed down version". She was the life of the party...but I never saw her after that Christmas....probably went out with a smile ;-) The purpose of the scarf evolved to celebrate Jesus' birth, basically why they call it "Christ-Mas". I use it as a tool to minister to people. They see it, they like it. They stare, they think, "is that candy edible, and what's he trying to sell me?" Then I give them a candy, and ask them what they think about Christmas, and Jesus. It's really to make people smile, and usually, it does. If not, no harm done. Either way they always have something to talk about when they get home. I'm proud to put my trust in Jesus, and I hope I was able to encourage you. Peter Merry
