Peter's Story

We moved west in '71 after my Dad joined the philosophy department at University of California at San Diego. I finished high school in La Jolla, CA. I took a BA in history (figuring I'd follow my parents into teaching) and then a master's in journalism when my heart failed to follow my head. For a while, I wrote a lot about rock 'n' roll for anyone that would run my stuff. Music would recede as a topic, but the critic role stayed with me. I was a movie reviewer for much of my nine years in newspapers -- first in Memphis and then just outside NYC. (I met my wife Evelyn at the latter paper in '87.) At the tail end, I sort of stumbled into being, of all things, a video and ...Expand for more
computer game critic. It's 20 years since I made the jump from newspapers to freelance. Along the way, I've worked as a magazine and web editor -- even in management for a blissfully short period -- and spent almost a year as a New York Times columnist before I dropped out of reviewing in 2001 to write books. Right now I'm back in San Diego with dog and parrot to look after my Dad. The city seems twice as big as when I finished high school out here, and now I barely know a soul. I'm working slowly on my eighth book (a collection of essays called A Gaming Life) and, sporadically, on a so far rather Beatlesque CD called "Incompetence." (Read: I don't play anything properly.)
