Peter's Story
I graduated from NVRHS in 1965… After working that summer at one of the Old Tappan Swim Clubs,,, I began my collegian direction at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ…
During the summer of 1967,,, I took off for Europe on my “I Gotta See It Before My Work Career Begins”,,, with my Fodor’s “Europe On $5 Per Day” travel guide,,, I begin the first leg of this journey by boarding the M/S Aurelia,,, a WW II troop ship being used by the UN Student Affaires Commission to take USA students ==> to Europe and European students ==> to the USA… On the second day out,,, I am introduced to a strikingly beautiful girl who was on a 30-day organized tour for Europe… We talked & laughed all day long,,, plus,,, dancing every night for the rest of the remaining 9-days on this “Aurelia Troop Ship” across the Atlantic,,, Changed my world for ever…
I altered my European Trip after one week in England and Holland to catch up with this incredible girl… Three days on the train,,, I catch up with her in Nice and then on an over night train to Rome… This remarkable girl’s name was Paulette Marie Secail,,, a Basque/French girl from San Francisco who’s parents were born in France and moved to the USA in 1929…
For the next 10-months,,, Paulette and I communicated (via the old fashion way); by letters written every day, cute love cards weekly and an occasional telephone call on a Sunday afternoon… Over this period of time,,, I fell completely in Love with her and was committed to do everything I could - - to make her my wife…
That very next summer (1968),,, I came out to San Francisco on my very first airplane ride… On the 6th day with her in San Francisco,,, I asked her to marry me… The following day we went to a jeweler her family had used in the past and purchased a diamond to be crafted into an engagement ring… Two week later we go back to New Jersey to br...Expand for more
eak the news to my Mom & Dad and extended family… Paulette returns to San Francisco two weeks later to begin her job with “The Emporium” while I finish my senior year at FDU.
We were married on May 31, 1969 at the French Catholic Church in downtown San Francisco… I get my first job with IBM and thus,,, this “All-American Dream Couple” begins our journey together without a care in the world - - just two madly in love people,,, me just 22-yrs old and Paulette 23-yrs,,, just kids in love with only having eyes for each other…
With two(2) children followed by six(6)-grand children in tow - - it’s time to move on from my 37-yrs. of computer industry work in the Bay Area and on to my next stage in life - - my 50th-yr ‘Itch’… Paulette and I move up to the Napa Valley,,, buy 20-acres of vineyard and proceed to build a home and boutique winery in the middle of the vineyard… An incredible 25-yrs of life in St. Helena, Napa Valley growing grapes and making wine… Fabulous life with my Paulette - yet the itch shows it’s ugly head again and comes full circle when I turn 75.
I am out in the vineyard,,, pruning,,, followed by disking on my tractor when my hand gets caught in the gears… Off to the the ER and 27-stiches later - - I have an epiphany… In my head I still think I am a man in his 50’s when in reality - - I am 75… I finally get my self absorbed ego in check,,, have a long awaited talk with myself and catch up with my body’s age of 75… Time to sell,,, Time to travel while my body is in good shape,,, See the world by going on trips every other month - - The new plan is to continue this “Dream with my Paulette” till the good Lord tells be to come home and be with those I love in heaven.
Status of my life Today - - Still completely in love with my Paulette,,, married now for 55-yrs.,,, and living in Lincoln Hills, California… Life couldn’t be better.
