Phil's Story

Life My wife Becci, Kennedy Class of 1975, and I married in 1979 in the LDS Oakland Temple. We have three sons aged 25, 23, and 11. Our life is pretty exciting, especially with our youngest son's autism. Notwithstanding life's bumps and lumps, Becci and I are happy, relatively healthy, and still very much in love. (Becci claims she had to raise FOUR sons!) School My time at Washing H.S. was relatively short. We moved out of state my freshman year, returned, and then graduated January 1975. I still have pleasant memories of school, mostly of how soon I could graduate. Since my parents family was large, my life pretty much revolved around them. I only formed a few close relationships at school, but liked most everyone. I still use folks I went to High School with as a basis for comparison when I meet new people. College Well, I graduated January 1975, having just turned 17 November 1974. My whole idea of doing this was to get as much College in before serving a two year mission for my church (I served in central Canada 1977-1978 speaking Spanish.) What I thought would be an accelerated educational plan, turned out to be a 23 year odyssey to get my four-year degree. I started out at CSUH, as a Biology major, switched to Geography, went on my mission, got back, and got married. We started to have our family, worked entry-level jobs, and went to school at CSUH, USF extension (now with an Organizational Behavior goal). I will let you catch your breath for a few seconds. Finally, we moved to Bakersfield, CA through work, attempt...Expand for more
ed school in 1986, returned in 1993, and finally finished up with a degree in English in March 1998! Whew! Do you get the sense that I had Attention Deficit Disorder? You're right! It wasn't all me, but ADD did not help. But boy, I am great at multi-tasking! Isn't it great to figure these things out a mere 30 years after graduation? That was schooling. The next is work. Workplace Fortunately I did not wait to start my career until after I got my degree. Living in the Bay Area with a small family at entry level wages was not cutting it. So, I applied and got hired on the California Highway Patrol in 1983. Now that has been one exciting career. There are too many experiences to list here. Just a hint though. I stopped John Provost (Timmy from Lassy), a member of the Getty family, and have chased vehicles traveling over 170 mph. (I chose only to go 140 mph). Enough said about that. I am currently a sergeant out of the Santa Cruz Area, with full retirement in less than eight years. Being a sergeant on the CHP is one of the best kept secrets for a great job! Military Mark Lowman (American High Class of 1975) and I went to the Federal Building at the Southland Mall in Hayward to sign up for the Draft. This office had everything boxed up for a move. We asked the person there where we needed to register for the Draft. We were told Nixon was deciding whether to retain the Draft and that they would get in touch with us if we needed to do anything. I would have gladly served, but they never got back to me and I had school to attend.
