Phil's Story
Life
After high school I spent 4 years in the Navy as a musician. Then graduated from PCC and UCLA with a music major. Taught in the Los Angeles City Schools for 15 years, mostly as a high school music teacher (band and orchestra director), but also high school math and U. S. History. During these years I was also working professionally as a dance band leader and pianist. Then in 1977 I left the teaching profession to become a piano tuner and electronic organ technician, which I'm still doing to this day. I've been married to the same lovely lady for fifty three years; we met at UCLA where we both played clarinet in the band. We have 3 children, 4 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. One of our daughters, Leslie, has been an actress and model for 30 years and you've seen her many times on TV (commercials and print work, along with made-for-TV movies and such). I attended Longfellow Elementry School in Pasadena from kindergarten through 6th grade, 1940 - 1947. Then Eliot Jr. High from 1947 through 1951. Then Pasadena City College from 1951 through 1954...Expand for more
,where I was president of the "Hi-Liters" entertainment group and wrote for and led the Hi-Liters band, and after 4 years in the Navy, again in 1958 - 1959.
College
After graduating from PCC in 1959 with an AA degree, I attended UCLA, graduating in 1961 with a BA in Music. I continued for another year of graduate work, receiving my General Secondary Teaching Credential. In 1966 I returned to earn a Masters Degree in Music Education which was granted in March, 1969.
Military
I enlisted in the U S Navy in August of 1954 as a musician. After graduating from Boot Camp in San Diego, I attended the Naval School Of Music in Washington D.C., and was assigned to the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Ticonderoga (CVA14) as a part of Unit Band 198. In 1956 I was transferred to the Naval Training Center Band in San Diego, and was discharged in July of 1958 with the rank of Musician Petty Officer First Class. To see a picture of me in those old Navy days, go to the Internet site for the U.S Navy Musicians Association and go to the unit band pictures for 1950 through 1959 and scroll to Unit Band 198. There I am, playing tenor sax, Yes that's me, in 1956!
