Phil's Story

Life I've been a nuclear weapons specialist in the USAF, a geologist, college mineralogy instructor, hotel night auditor, military communications specialist, two-way radio peddler, photographer, manufacturing engineer for Boeing, and a computer geek (software QA). I am teaching Earth Sciences (Geology and Oceanography) at Southwestern and MiraCosta Colleges, doing nature photography, computer graphics for a geo-tech firm, designing book covers and doing layouts, and a few web sites. I'm very active as an officer of the San Diego Association of Geologists, currently (2012) past-president. I just started drawing my military pension as of my 60th birthday, then full social security in 2011 - where did the time go? School A school bio - where to start? OK, well, here goes... I've been a college student in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and oughts - five decades. And what do I k...Expand for more
now? That I want to know more. My grandparents were taking college classes (from UWis extension) into their late 70's, and I have no reason to expect that I will quit learning any earlier than that. Remember the lesson of the dinosaurs: adapt or die! College My college career turned out to be just that - a career. Forty years, twelve institutions of higher learning in three countries, and so far, I only have a masters degree. Stay tuned! Military I joined the Air Force to avoid the draft in 1967, and Uncle Sam sent me to Canada for my "overseas" assignment. Exited the USAF in 1973 in Grand Forks, North Dakota and joined the Air National Guard in Spokane in 1982. Transferred membership to Tacoma in 1985, and to Costa Mesa (California) in 1989. Retired from being a weekend warrior in 1996, and started drawing a pension in 2005. May you also live in interesting times.
