Philip's Story
Retired and now living in Brevard for the past four years. Married, two daughters, one grandson. No pets.... yet, and 3 acres to take care of. Remembering with fondness my friends and acquaintances from our days at West. My best friend my last year at West was Randy Prunty who one night climbed on top of Mulberry Baptist Church with me. Several good friends from West attended Gardner-Webb College with me like Mike Gurley ('76), Tom Query ('75), Ray Lewis ('75, and my first roommate there), and, of course, my buddy Randy Prunty ('76), among others, and where I got a BA in history (of course).
I’ve been working on genealogy for a long time, since I was 11. Over the years I’ve found out that some of my classmates were distant cousins, Myron Lawing Caldwell, for instance. My great-grandmother was a Lawing. There’s only one Lawing family! :-) It took me a long time, but I finally made some connections that have taken a few of my lines back to Scottish nobility and royalty, which takes them...Expand for more

I was so young and stupid and terribly broken at Coulwood and West Meck, I could have been a better friend to so many. I am trying to make up for that by being kind to others by looking out for their wellbeing, and pray that all the wrongs done to me, and ESPECIALLY all the wrongs I've done to others will be redeemed in the end. I work for that in this world and will finally experience it in the world to come.
I often look back at the things I've saved from West Meck, including my yearbooks (still have all of them... I have a penchant for hoarding and nostalgia.), and am thankful for the good that my friends poured into my life and loved me in spite of myself. Some friends I kept in touch for a while, some for several years, but it's been a long time since I've talked with any (except for Gail, Kim, Matt, Mike, and Nella, much appreciated!) I would love to hear from you and thank you for being my friends.
