Philip's Story
Hi Everyone, I have been checking out classmates more recently due to the reunion coming up. It seems there is more activity lately. Unfortunately I am not going to the reunion. I'm living in Oregon now and I am a stay at home dad so I can't just up and leave.
I enjoy reading the stories that you write; more of you need to do them, and it is fun to check out the NOW photos that you post.
A quick rundown of my life since high school -
I went to U-Lowell for a little over a year and realized I didn't want to be an engineer. So I just worked some retail jobs until I got a job working for Raytheon. I decided to go to technical school for HVAC (heating/AC/Refrigeration) and after graduating I continued to work full time at Raytheon and part time at Beacon Refrigeration in Malden until I had enough time to take the license exam. I passed that and within a few months I got a job in HVAC at Raytheon. I worked there for 18 years, with the last year on Andros Island in the Bahamas. Talk about the perfect job if your a scuba diver, which I am.
While home for the holidays I met my now wife at a New years eve party. I stayed in the Bahamas for another 9 months and them moved back to Boston.
We lived...Expand for more
in Alston for a year before moving to New Bedford. We bought a 7 family house to live in while my wife went to Grad school. I remodeled most of it and after she graduated and got a job offer in Oregon we sold it for a nice profit.
We then moved to Oregon where she started teaching and I got a job doing HVAC for the state.
Using the profits from the sale in New Bedford we bought 16 rental units and a house for us. We have a great back yard, about 1/3 of an acre for the 2 dogs. We built a shop for me and I just put the finishing touches on an art studio for my wife.
When we found out we were having a baby we both decided one of us should stay home to take care of him. Since we moved here for Laura to take a teaching position it seemed only right that I quit :)
So we sold 12 of the rental units and I have been a stay at home dad for the past 2 years. We are planning on having another so it looks like I maybe out of the rat race for another 5 years or so. In the mean time I'm starting to take some classes to work towards a degree of some kind. Still don't know what I want to do when I grow up!
That is the past 25 years in a nut shell. Life is good, and I hope it is for all your you.
Phil
