Phillip's Story
Life
After H.S. I attended Rutgers, then Stockton College for a short time before I graduated from Central Conn. State University with a BS-ED in Biology and minors in Microbiology and General Science. I chose a career in Quality Assurance and now manage the QA department of a $1B+ Biopharmaceutical company. My job has opened up many overseas travel opportunities(I've spent a few months in the U.K. consulting for our pharmaceuticals division). I live with my wife, Faith, in Boston, Massachusetts. Faith is a three-time Emmy winning television producer who now works with the Harvard Peabody museum in Cambridge. We still have fond memories of our trips to Florence, Siena, and Cinque Terre Italy in April 2000, Paris in November 2002 and our Honeymoon in Hawaii in July of 2002. I am also a professional 'art' photographer and plan to publicly show my work sometime in 2009 (I'm doing my time in the darkroom now to prepare for this). You can find me on photo.net.
For my mid-life crisis, I chose to buy a Vespa (to my wife's relief), which I use to commute to work in Cambridge (just across the Charles River from Boston). Not only is it fuel-efficient (88 mpg), but it's less expensive than the "T".
School
I couldn't possibly tell anyone about my biggest crush because I still have it, she never knew it, & I would be so embarrassed if she ever found out!
My favorite memory of HS was when Lee Pelton, Steve Hackett, Frank Lodato, and I piled into my parent's station wagon one night & "borrowed" about a dozen For Sale signs from the lawns in the neighborhood along with some flashing construction horses. We drove around for miles with those flashing lights intermittently illuminating the interior of the car as we tried to avoid the local law enforcers- what a scene that was! Then we drove to Sal Rosa's home and planted the F...Expand for more
or Sale signs on his lawn, and erected the construction hazard lights in his driveway! As loud as our giggling was, I was surprised that we weren't caught! But, as soon as the next day, Sal seemed to know who the culprits were although I'm sure no one told him!
Workplace
During college, I paid for my tuition with part time positions in several different hospitals. I did everything from X-ray runner and orderly to Unit Secretary in the Intensive Care units (I even did a stint as a staffing coordinator- boy, did the nurses hate me when I called!). After college, I took the first job I saw as a "microbiologist"- landing me in the Food industry. Thus started my career in Quality. The food industry was a major disappointment to me- too many "Business Decisions" conflicted with product quality issues- so I successfully targeted a career in Biotechnology. I've worked at several companies, but found my niche at Genzyme. My career has spanned many technological areas in Biopharmaceuticals. I now have experience in Contract Manufacturing, Active Pharmaceutial Ingredients (API), Small scale Cell and Tissue culturing, Protein Purification, Fill/Finish and Lyophilization technology, Small and Large Molecule production, and autologous Cell Therapies. I've been responsible for product release, Compliance, Documentation systems, and Auditing systems at both site and corporate levels. Currently, I work with the emerging technology of Cell Therapy manufacturing and am involved with developing strategies for compliance with proposed international regulations.
In December of 2006 my career took an unexpected turn- I was recognized as a true "geek" at heart, and asked to analyze our quality systems and improve the ways we collected and used our data. Now I'm working with electronic workflows and laboratory information systems!
