Phillip's Story
I lived in Sanford from Dec. 1959 - June 1966, moved to Mims, Fl. While I was living in Sanford, I went to Sanford Grammar School. I played Football in the eighth grade, 1964, and lead the team in TDs. I did not play in 1965. I cannot remember too many of the team players, except for Edgar, but not his last name. In the eight grade I remember a girl name Bonnie (? last name). I can name a few people, Larry Dobson, Terri Stidd, he had a cousin named Doug. Then Douglas (?), Nancy Crabtree, Barbara Wasem, The principle was Mr. Carlton and the dean was Mr. Buckman or something like that. Gordon who also played football the same time I did. When I was in the seventh, I remember a girl by the name of Debra (Debbie) Whitley, her father owned a welding shop just north of the school on French Ave. (hwy. 1-.92) I remember the civic center down near lake Monroe, and there would be youth dances, and one live band called the Yates would play now and then. I remember the song "little black egg". Aaron Keith, Edward and Stephen who lived in the overhead garage apt behind the Keith's house. My Father, Rev. G. B. Smith was the pastor of Central Baptist on 13th St. and Oak Ave. and we lived across the street (Oak Ave, 1312 Oak Ave). I remember to friends My brother Reuben and I hung out with john and Ronnie (?) lot of info. huh. ave. in the open field. David Hoff, was on the team, as was Alverez who was a running back. I think his name was Richard, or Rick. One of the Coaches was Mr. Buckner, and the head coach at the time was Coach Pelham. I had a teacher Ms. Smith for math. the Track was a cinder track, and the infield was dirt. the basketball cts were concrete. The lunch room was behind the main school bldg. and it had lots of windows, there would be dances for the classes in the lunch hall. If I remember anything else I will write it down. I live in Lake City, Florida, a city N. E. of Gainesville, Fl. 35 miles, and west of Jacksonville 52 miles. 65 Miles south of Valdosta, Ga. I-75 and I-10 intersect in the city limits, and Lake City is about 153 miles north of Sanford. I am sixty-seven and did a tour in Viet Nam, I worked of an electric Coop. 42 yrs. started in 1970-2011, in Orange Park, Florida, just west of Jacksonville. I have children that are grown, and a total of eight grandchildren ranging from the ages of two to 24 Years Old, My oldest daughter is 45, and my youngest son is 24. I went college for a degree in Psychology, and Business Administration. But, I preferred to work as a utility lineman and train others in Line Work. I did a nineteen yrs. as a staff chaplain volunteer at a all men max. security correctional inst. out side of lake City. I am currently a Elder/Deacon at Gateway Baptist Church, in Town; and have enjoyed helping others. Helping others is what I do; with no regrets.
