Phillip's Story

Military I went into the Army in 68 and left for Viet Nam in 69. I flew over on the same plane with Danny Zimmerman who gaduated OHS in 68. After we got to Cam Rahn Bay,where we were to be assigned our units, I ran into Roger Arnold who was preparing to go back to the States. He told me some pretty hairy stories. That was pretty wild! I was transfered to the Army's A.C.V. (Air Cushion Vehicle) Unit also known as Hovercraft. It was attached to the 9th Infantry Division at Dong Tam along the Mekong river in the Delta. I stayed there till about August 69. Then my unit moved to Ben Luc. A small Navy Base on the Vam Co Tay river Just southwest of Saigon. While I was in VN I worked with units from 9th Div. including the 3/60 Inf.,3/47 Inf.,3/31Inf.,LRRP's (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol) which later became the 75th Rangers,Navy SEALS who were stationed at Ben Luc, PRU's (Provincial Reconnaissance Unit) who were hired guns. I also worked with Allen Tracy's platoon (class of 68)just days after he was hit losing both his legs in an ambush. I wound up meeting two other guys from OHS. I can't remember their names. That was a total of 5 guys I knew ...Expand for more
from Orrville in Nam at the same time. There may have been others. I was at first a gunner on the craft then I piloted them for the last six months of my tour. I operated mostly in the Plain of Reeds. The "Plain" is exactly like the Everglades in Florida. On January 9th,1970 my craft I was piloting with 24 of us (8 crew and 16 infantry) on board ran over a 250 lb. bomb in the Plain of Reeds. It blew the craft in half. There were 16 causualties severe enough to be Medavaced out. Fortunaly all I got was a concusion.I DEROSED (came home) in Feb,5,1970. I got out of the Army when I returned but reinlisted three years later and served with B Co.,1/15 Inf Battalion,3rd Infantry Division in Germany for three years. This Unit was the very Company Audie Murphy (the most decorated U.S soldier of WWII) served in. I love Germany. They have the best Beer in the world!! Learned to snow ski in Bavaria, traveled around Europe visiting Castles and Museams. It was great. After getting out of the service I worked in Wyoming then moved to South Florida were I have been since 1978. Still waiting for the seasons to change. No seasonal weather changes here.
