Cabell Elementary 1986- Present: Kindergarten, First I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a an excellent idea. As it turns out, they were correct. I blow off steam by engaging in this sudden need to clean the entire house from top to bottom during some random hour in the night, especially when I am angry! I now live in Dallas, Texas. I moved here in 1984 because Orleans Parish School Board was " paying me far too much money":) When I received my first pay check, I thought," Come on guys, stop playing around! Where's the other half of my pay. If I could improve my home, I'd add a pool. A 'Safe Room" so that I could hide away for at least 2 days. My dream home would be on a beach front. If I won $100 million, I'd give 10% of it to my church, then spend the rest on keeping my father comfortable, my children's education, travel, shop and invest for the future. My first real job was at a Day Care/Recreation center in New Orleans.I worked part time in the evenings and attended UNO in the mornings. A childhood memory I'll never forget is the time my younger sister decided taking the bus to school one morning was not going to work for her.She talked me into taking my mom's car.So I found the keys and took her to school. I was 15, but no license to drive. The drive went as planned until we reached St. Charles Avenue. So to make a long story short, always yield to the Street Car.In case you were wondering. No we didn't crash. However, we came within a 12 inches of being grounded for life :)! One trophy story I'd loke to share is about the award I received from being voted The Teacher of the Year for the 2008-2009 school year. It was so rewarding to have been selected from such a large group as 'The Best of the Year'. The ceremony was so amazing.I was showered with so many flowers gifts and words of encouragement. My current age is 49 (2009). When I was 12, I thought that...Expand for more
people my age now would be ready for retirement and the best of their days behind them.I also thought that they would be married for life and, " Live Happily Ever After".I was so completely wrong. Life begins after 49.Retirement in in the far future. You learn from your past and get a second chance to do it all over again. As for the " Happily Ever After" part, sounds great at the ending of a bedtime Fairytale!! Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. My biggest surprise has been believing in the idea that you have to be with that "someone special to be truly happy". Happiness is what you make out of it.It is the ability to smile and enjoy life even if there's just you and you alone.Being alone doesn't equate being lonely. My best friend would tell you I'm actually timid, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as conceded. Nothing could be father from the truth. Another childhood memory I'll never forget is the weekend trips my parents, sisters brother and I would take to our home in the Country. My father had this dream of building a house in Mississippi on my Great Uncle's farm. His dream finally came true when my Great Uncle gave my parents some land on which to build a place where we could live when we visited Mississippi. I didn't exactly fall in love with the idea of staying with my Grandmother when we visited Mississippi. I don't think I was exactly her favorite person in the whole world either. She never took the time to really get to know the real me.Once my father decided to get started with the building process, every ablebodied person had a task from start to finish. You were either a worker, or helped with the meals. My favorite area was learning the dynamics behind the process of erecting a building on a vacant piece of land.I left the cooking up to the other women. The weekend trips were such a success that there was a point during the building process where we would have almost half of the teenagers and sometimes their parents also, trailing us to the 'Country' for the weekends.Prior to the house being completed, everyone would camp out. There was a small farm house where those who did not care for the idea of becoming "one with nature", were able to sleep indoors.Guess where I slept? Anyways, the entire process was so amazing from beginning to end. The house was completed in 1978. However, my father was always making additions to accomodate the extra visitors. Those were the good old days when we were able to trust our neighbors to visit our home even when my family did not join them on the trip.
