Phyllis's Story
Life
I got out of teaching and went into the restaurant business. I was a bartender for 10 years in Toledo. Then my job took me to Michigan, where I spent four long years. I just recently took a job managing the restaurant and bar at King's Island Resort and Conference Center. It's GREAT to be back home!!
The job turned out not to be so great, so I've now moved on to Frickers! I don't know what I was thinking, working for a stuffy hotel. The laid back, sports bar is definitely more my style! Look for me at one of the Dayton stores soon. Well, Fricker's turned out not to be as great a place to work as it is to drink at. I have since moved on to Frisch's. It's much better hours and pay. Maybe now, after 20 years, I can try to have a somewhat normal social life!
Just recently became an official adult. I bought my first house in the Belmont area of Dayton. If anyone is in the area, stop by and see me. It's a quiet neighborhood, with a great backyard for summer barbecues!
School
Isn't it funny how we all thought our life was so rough while we were in high school? Now, looking back, it was the best of times! My fondest memories are of being backstage during productions, building the Holiday at Home floats, and travelling to speech tournaments all over the state.
Wouldn't it be great to be able to go back to a time when we really didn't have any responsibilities? All we had to worry about was what party to go to on the weekend? But, unfortunately, we...Expand for more
all have to become grown-ups eventually. But it is nice to look back, and smile.
College
What can I say about my college years? They were some of the best! I met my best friend my freshman year, and got a godchild my senior year! As far a the education part of it, it definitely left something to be desired. I have never formally used my degree, since I was put in the wrong program, and never given any guidance as to what classes to take. I learned more about life, than anything else.
I wish I could say that I keep in touch with all my old friends, but I've let most of them slip away. I guess becoming a grown-up with responsibilities does that to people. We just live our lives, and forget the people that made us who we are.
Workplace
I started working in restaurants right out of college to pay for my master's degree. When my brain could no longer take doing both, I decided to take a break from school, and decided I liked the industry. I bartended for quite a few years before going into management. I worked for Max & Ermas up in Toledo and Michigan for four years. I then moved to California Pizza Kitchen when they opened in Ann Arbor. Just this past November, I decided I wanted to be closer to family, and took a job managing the restaurant and bar at the King's Island Resort.
After deciding that hotels weren't for me, I worked for Fricker's for 3 years. I then moved to Frisch's where I still am. Not really my thing, but the money isn't bad!
