Phyllis's Story
Life
Wow, more than 18 years have passed since high school. Where did all the years go?
In 1986, I started Weatherford College under early admissions. I had great plans on going to college and graduating early, well it seems those plans were derailed when I got pregnant with my first child, Trent. I quit college to have a baby. (That baby turns 18 this year, quite a milestone for me.) While I was pregnant I met the love of my life (Mike) and we married one month after the baby was born. Mike loved and accepted me and my child unconditionally.
Mike was a race horse jockey from Trinity Meadows, even before Trinity was para-mutual. We spent the next ten years with the horses. In 1991, we had a second child, Kevin, who is now 13 and in junior high.
During the early years of our marriage I had different part-time jobs, nothing notable. In 1993, I went to work for Project Head Start in Weatherford as a teaching assistant. I worked for Head Start on and off for the next 5 years as a teaching assitant and a substitute. I then started substitute teaching for Weatherford ISD. I have been substituting in Weatherford for 8 years now. While working for Head Start they asked me if I would like to put on a clown costume and entertain the kids, so I thought why not? I put the costume on and I loved it. It was awesome. Shortly after that I went to clown school in Arlington and I got my first job as a professional clown for Funny Business Clowns and Characters. From there, I went to Fairytale Entertainment where I still work to this day. I do birthday parties, company picnics, and ...Expand for more
corporate events. I do magic, balloons, and facepainting. I love my job. Entertaining kids is the best.
In 2002, I divorced the love of my life because of his drinking problem that he had developed over the years. When I divorced him, I enrolled in college. I will graduate in 2006 with a degree in interdisciplinary studies and a minor in teaching. I will go on to teach school and I will go to graduate school and pursue a degree in counseling, but I will never stop clowning around.
Sometimes, life gives you detours, but the detours are what you make of them. Sometimes life gives you lemons, but you just have to make lemonade. I would not change one thing about my life. If I hadn't had that baby I would probably have been finished with college many years ago, but as the song writer once said "I wouldn't have missed it for the world" and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I have two awesome kids and a kewl job! God has blessed me and I couldn't ask for more.
Update:
The love of my life is now sober and has been sober for more than a year. I remarried him in October and we have never been happier. Goes to show God does answer prayers!
Update:
I have graduated college and I now work at Weatherford College as a Learning Lab Specialist. I love my job. I tutor many wonderful students each and every day. I am starting my masters program this summer at Texas Wesleyan!
Update:
Life is moving along as planned. I am now a proud graduate student, pursuing a masters in counseling psychology at Texas Wesleyan. The husband and the kids are doing great and life is sweet!
