Preston's Story
Hi all,
I feel like I'm attached to both the Boca High School class of '73, and the St. Andrew's class of '73, having transferred to St. Andrew's in late Middle School, but keeping many friends at Boca High School. Ultimately I was a boarding student at St. Andrew's, when my Mom divorced and moved back to Texas. I left St. Andrew's for college at Brown University in 1972, after my Junior year at St. Andrew's, entering a program that lasted 7 years and led to a Sc.B. in Biology and also directly to an M.D. I accepted a US Army scholarship to pay for Medical School, and subsequently did my internship and residency in Neurology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, finishing there in 1983. I ended up with 15 years of total Army service, then went into private practice in 1990 in the Virginia suburbs of DC. I married my wife Margaret, who I met at Brown, in 1977, and we have one daughter, Kate, who is now 37 and married. She and her husband both work for the US Government in various national security capacities. My wife is an economis...Expand for more
t, running a health economics unit in a large consulting firm, and after spending 2 years as head of the Neurology and Neurosurgery Outpatient Department at Johns Hopkins Hospital in late '90's, and practicing neuro-ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Hospital there, I went into solo practice of neuro-ophthalmology in Northern Virginia until I retired in 2010. Since retirement, I have spent 10 years driving race cars in amateur and professional series, winning a National amateur championship in Pirelli World Challenge in 2019, and finishing on the podium (2nd or 3rd) in 5 SCCA national championship races. I've remained active in the advancement of the interests of my fellow sub specialists as the President of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmological Society, and subsequently it's Chairman of the Executive Board. I remain on the part-time faculty at Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Neurology. I wish all my old friends well, and would be happy to respond if you'd like to contact me. Best regards, Preston Calvert, M.D. FAAN, FNANOS.
