Quentin's Story
Life
I remember bayous, cypress trees & spanish moss. Cajun music, Kingston Trio, Little Richard. Chuck Berry. Fats Domino. Ricky Nelson. Elvis on Ed Sullivan. Kiddie shows at the Strand. (I watched Bill Halley & the Comets sing "Rock Around the Clock" & "See Ya Later, Alligator" over & over one Saturday until my frantic mom came & yanked me out.)
Flipping nickels before homeroom. Frog in your arm. Dancing in the gym. Doing the Twist & the Mashed Potatoes. First kiss. Then second kiss. Oo la la! Chippin' in to buy $2 of 25-cent gas, then cruisin' MacArthur Drive, Green Avenue, Simmons Drive. (Swerving madly through traffic to catch a carload of girls then ignoring them so you can look cool. Go figure.) Putt-Putt golf, the batting cage & the trampolines. Stopping to see what's shakin' at Zack's Whopaburger.
All those wonderful, dedicated teachers!
Bonfires & pep rallies. Mr. Pearson saying, "The band will now blow us out on Dixi...Expand for more
e!" Playing Port Arthur. Grrr! Winnin' District.
Goin' dancin' across the river. The Boogie Kings. Growin' up with the best dang people in the world. If only for a moment, we could turn back the time! Right? Then on to real life.
Restlessness & a voracious curiosity have dragged me through 3 careers. I sang & wrote songs in my 20s to my 40s(still gig sometimes).
Later I wrote sports for a large daily newspaper in Colorado & sold free-lance articles (still do that some, too).
Later still, I went back to school for computer training. Ack! Homework in my fifties!
I love the written word. I have been writing for much of my adult life in one form or another. I currently live in NYC. More people live in some city blocks here than in all of Orange. Imagine me, a country boy, living in the city! <smiling>
