ralph's Story

As with most of you I'm sure, a lot has happened in our lives since KWHS. I entered the Air Force in Aug. of '65 first as an administrative specialist. This was not the job I had hoped for (the Air Force Band career field) but due to heavy enlistment at the time because of the Vietnam War draft, the band field for trumpet players was full. So I got out in Oct. '68. I had met a girl while stationed in NY and married her in Feb. '67. That was coming up on 45 years ago and we are still married!! We have 3 children who have given us 12 grandchildren and 2 step-grands. They keep us busy and broke from buying birthday gifts, christmas gifts, etc. HA!HA! I did go back into the Air Force in 1972, immediately auditioned for the AF Band and was accepted. (I had been giging during the time I was out). I stayed in until retirement in Sept. '90. While in the AF Band we had assignments in Fla., the Phillippines, Arizona, Georgia (twice), Va., and Alaska. I think our favorite place was Alaska. It is so beautiful there and the...Expand for more
re was a lot to see and do. Ofcourse being in the band we traveled all over the place doing concert tours. It was an exciting and very tiring job at times. We moved here to NC (my birth place) to be near my Mother and help her as much as we could. Sadly she passed away in 2008 at age 80. My Dad passed away in 1986 very suddenly. We miss them both very much. We had always said we would move out of NC after my Mother died, but so far we're still here, partly due to the housing market crashing and being unable to sell our house. We still have hopes of moving one of these days to who knows where. After years in the AF traveling we get a little antsy being in one place so long. I've been fully retired since 2004 (disability) due to a fall from a ladder in which I broke 6 vertebrae (and 7 other bones). I'm doing a lot better now but still have trouble with endurance. My wife has also had health setbacks (from a ruptured appendix complication), but all things considered we are doing well. Hope all of you are well also.
