Ralph's Story
Life
Since graduation, I have been in the Navy, either as an active duty member ('70-'72 and '85-'02) or a reservist ('69-'70 and '72'85), attended Patternmaker "A" and "J" schools, was called back to active duty in '85. Retired from the Navy in October of 2002 after serving for 32yrs, 9mos, 8days, but who was counting!!!!! Been around the world, served in Viet-Nam, was in Desert Storm. Visited Spain, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Diego Garcia, Wales, Norway, Nova Scotia, Bahamas, Barbados, sailed all up and down the East and West Coasts and through the Panama and Suez Canals.
I have 5 children; 31, 28, 26, and twins 12, and 2 grandchildren.
My claim to fame? Bowling has been the constant in my life. I bowled in the Collegiate National Championships in '78, competed in my first two pro tournaments and the ABC Nationals in '03, and have won Gold Medals in the TN State Regional Senior Games in Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles. In the TN State Senior games, I won golds in Singles and Doubles, and a Silver in Mixed Doubles. Bronze Medalist in Pittsburgh. Rolled my first 300 game in June of '04 and won the Singles, Doubles and All Events championships in Kingsport, TN.
School
The most fun I had in HS was playing in the band, whether it was Marching, Jazz, Concert or whatever. Those frosty mornings on the football field practicing, and then seeing the finished product on Friday nights and actually being a part of it gave me intense satisfaction. And then there was the Saturday morning bowling league, Rainbow Bread sponsored it. Then it became TABY, precurser to AJBC. Always tried to ...Expand for more
have a good time. Mr Perez and his English Class (remember "Sinners in the hands of an angry GOD???"), and my "welcome" to HS, provided by Coach Mensor in his English class were classic theater. I was always the shortest kid in class, and Coach Mensor thought that I was a 3rd grader the first day of school trying to send me down the hall...until I showed him my class registration slip!!!!!! On the weekends, my family would pack up and spend the weekends in Ruidoso during the Summer months just to escape the heat of the desert.
College
Went to Armstrong State College (now Armstrong-Atlantic University) majoring in Business Marketing/Management and was a member of the bowling team. Second in the nation in '78. Left school after 3 years and have not finished my degree
Workplace
My first job was at a printing plant, and that only lasted one day!!! That was all I was needed for!!! From there I was called to active duty in the Navy, where spent 2 and a half years. Came back and went to work at a couple of family owned cabinet shops, and then to a car stereo store. I went to work for Circuit City for 3 years, did 2 and half years with J.C.Penny, and then went back into the Navy from where I retired in Oct of 2002. The entire time, I was a reservist. Got recalled in '85 with the military buildup under President Reagan
Began working with FTHRA as a wheel chair van driver in April of '04. Left the company in Sep of '07 because of "politics". Am now employed with Gibson Medical Transport doing pretty much the same thing, but no wheelchairs.
Living up here in TN is great. I encourage all those who have never visited to check it out!!!!
