Ralph's Story
After leaving high school, I thought I wanted to enter politics. I like people, enjoy public speaking, like to write and express opinions ("often wrong but never in doubt"). Toward that end, I ended up with a couple of degrees from East Carolina in political science and English.
Reality was different than the academic descriptions and, after some exposure to government and the political process, decided politics were not a profession I wanted to become a part of.
I have always admired a lifestyle where a person could live anywhere and have the freedom to do just about anything that is productive and enjoyable. We moved from Alexandria, VA in 1980 to Huntsville, Alabama where we lived a number of years where I worked for NASA and then resigned (on my 40th birthday) to start a human resources training/publishing/temporary staffing company as a contractor for the federal government.
I liked not working for anyone else and the satisfaction of growing a company outweighed the stress and tension of the headaches that come with a fast-growing small business. The company grew way beyond our original expectations and I sold the business in 2001.

opulation is small (probably 25,000 or so with about 300,000 tourists thrown in during the summer and spring break). The weather is warm, the crystal white beaches are inviting, the ocean is emerald green, the restaurants are plentiful, and the culture is interesting with people having moved here from all over the country.
My son is an internet programmer, my wife is a retired NASA attorney and we have discovered the power and freedom of the internet in semi-retirement. As an outgrowth of the former business, our family provides a daily internet news service for employees and retirees of the federal government (fedsmith.com) with a free daily newsletter for subscribers. I also enjoy writing movie reviews for Netflix ("atthebeach") and we travel occasionally.
Fortunately, I have the pleasure of not working for anyone else with the freedom to write and send out a daily newsletter from anywhere in the world as long as there is an internet connection.
I enjoyed seeing so many former classmates at the reunion held in Fayetteville in November 2007. Please take a look at some of the photos so see how many former classmates you recognize! If case you missed this latest reunion, I hope everyone will be able to attend the next one.
